Troops kill 36 terrorists, arrest 137, rescue 140 hostages in Borno

The Armed Forces high command has said troops on the frontline neutralised no fewer than 36 terrorists and rescued 140 hostages in two weeks. Giving a bi-weekly account of its stewardship, yesterday, in Abuja, Director, Defence Media Operations (DDMO), Maj-Gen. Edward Buba, noted that “the military has no greater priority” than to restore normalcy and end security challenges across the country.  

  
According to Buba, military men and women have answered a call to fight the perpetrators of evil to submission. He said: “We are in a good fight, and must flush them out from among us. As at August 3, 2023, the military neutralised 36 terrorists and arrested 137 gunmen, three gunrunners, two kidnappers and six collaborators. They also nabbed 15 oil thieves, recovered N3,177,650 and rescued 140 kidnapped hostages.
  
“In the course of operations across the country, troops recovered 37 weapons and 370 ammunition. On July 27, 2023, troops ambushed Boko Haram/Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists at Shetimari in Konduga Local Council of Borno State. Two terrorists were neutralised, while one AK-47 rifle, one AK-47 rifle magazine, six rounds of 7.62 mm special ammo and one mobile phone were recovered.
 
 “On July 30, troops and hybrid forces ambushed suspected BH/ISWAP terrorists at a checkpoint in Kubtara Village, Dikwa Local Council of Borno. Following a firefight, troops neutralised one terrorist and recovered one AK-47 rifle, one AK-47 rifle magazine and five rounds of 7.62 mm special ammo.”
  
On rescued hostages, he said following an intelligence report on terrorists’ activities at Hashime Village in Mafa Local Council, troops conducted a raid, rescued five hostages and recovered a motorcycle and other items.”
 
He also noted that troops of Operation Delta Safe (OPDS) sustained the momentum against the activities of crude oil thieves, destroying many illegal refining sites.
  
According to him, the troops discovered and destroyed 61 dug-out pits, 32 wooden boats, 87 storage tanks, three vehicles, 126 cooking ovens, three outboard engines, one speedboat, two motorcycles, one generator, two pumping machines and 36 illegal refining sites. 

“Troops also recovered 310,700 litres of crude oil, 14,675 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), 49,000 litres of Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK), one weapon, three ammunitions and apprehended 22 suspects engaged in crude oil theft.
  
“On July 2023, troops, during an anti-illegal bunkering operation, intercepted and destroyed one wooden boat loaded with 1,000 litres of product suspected to be stolen crude oil at Wellhead Cluster, Opukushi Community in Ekeremor Local Council of Bayelsa State.”
