Representatives of the University of the Nations, Abara, in Etché Local Council of Rivers State, yesterday, urged the state and the Federal Governments to intervene in relentless attacks from land grabbers allegedly operating with impunity under the apparent protection of certain Rivers State police command operatives.

The Project Manager of the university, Salvation Moses, noted that this is a pressing concern threatening the institution’s integrity and existence.

He claimed that the criminal elements have become emboldened, showing shocking disdain for the rule of law, and encroached on the land duly purchased by the American Missionary Institution over a decade ago.

Moses disclosed this in a press briefing in Port Harcourt, saying that alleged land grabbers possess no legitimate documentation to support their claims, but relied on armed thugs and corrupt security agents who overlook the law for personal gain.

Meanwhile, at the time of filing this report, the Rivers State Police Command spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the officers never partook in such cases, especially in land cases.

She added that the Commissioner of Police (CP) confirmed the incident and has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

The River police spokesperson expressed surprise that the people held a press briefing regarding the matter despite it being under investigation. She disclosed that the State Criminal Investigation Department is handling the matter and investigation has started.
