W’Bank to partner Nigeria in developing maritime sector
The World Bank has expressed interest in partnering with the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy to develop Nigeria’s maritime sector.
A World Bank delegation, headed by Lia Sieghart, made this known yesterday during a courtesy visit to the minister, Adegboyega Oyetola, in Abuja.
She explained that the team was at the ministry to discuss the Federal Government’s vision for developing a sustainable and integrated blue economy, including sustainable fisheries.
Sieghart said the global lender sought to identify areas where it could offer expertise and knowledge.
She commended President Bola Tinubu for establishing the ministry, describing it as a strong indication of the government’s commitment to advancing the sector.
Responding, Oyetola expressed gratitude for the visit and outlined the ministry’s initiatives to map out the country’s marine and blue economy resources.
He stressed that the development of fisheries and aquaculture remains a top priority for the ministry.
“Fisheries are the flagship of the ministry. We are taking all necessary steps to regulate activities in this sector. We are designating specific terminals for fishing activities and aim to implement a sustainable fisheries programme. Our goal is to make it attractive to the youth,” Oyetola stated.
He added that the ministry intends to reduce importation and encourage local production in Nigeria.
Oyetola expressed the ministry’s willingness to collaborate with the World Bank to realise the government’s vision for the sector.
