Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo is facing a backlash on social media for unveiling a statue of himself in the Western Region.

The statue, situated at the entrance of the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, was unveiled on Wednesday during his visit that has been dubbed a “thank-you tour”

Ghana’s minister Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah claimed that the statue was meant to honour Akufo-Addo’s development initiatives during Akufo-Addo’s presidency.

Darko-Mensah, who oversees the Western Region, noted several key projects initiated under Akufo-Addo.

However, many Ghanaians have expressed disapproval, viewing it as “self-glorification” and unnecessary.

Opposition MP Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah stated, “The people of the Western Region deserve better than these self-serving displays.”

Akufo-Addo, who will step down in January after two terms, has claimed to have fulfilled 80% of his promises to Ghanaians.

Despite this, the statue has sparked intense backlash on social media, with many reacting in anger.

“He is very deserving of this exquisite monument. The greatest president I’ve ever had. You will be missed by Ghanaians,” one person posted, adding that Akufo-Addo was the “founder of Ghana’s free education system”.

Another user said ”Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo knows that after December 2024, nobody will ever think of honouring him for his poor performance, but people will rather remember him as the most corrupt, selfish, arrogant and the worst president ever. So he will honour himself by himself before.”
