A 47-year-old man has been stabbed to death on the property of the Oyotunji African Village in Beaufort County, a county in the U.S. state of South Carolina, on Monday.

The victim, identified as Adegbolu Abiogemo Adefunmi, was a prominent figure in the community, known as the King of Yoruba in North America.

A 53-year-old suspect, Akiba Meredith, has been taken into custody and charged with murder in connection with Adefunmi’s death.

Meredith is currently being held at the Beaufort County Detention Centre, with bond deferred.

The Oyotunji African Village has declined to comment on the incident, citing the need to focus on a cultural ceremony that typically lasts two to three days.

Adefunmi was remembered by acquaintances as a regular at a nearby gas station, where he would stop by daily for a cup of coffee.

He was described as a kind and gentle person who will be missed.

The investigation into the fatal stabbing is ongoing.
