The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation condemned the misinformation in some quarters that the events, which would be held in Owerri, Imo State, and Enugu, are capable of causing confusion regarding the concurrent hosting.

The National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze, Dr. Alex Ogbonnia, clarified that the Igbo Day, as well as the summit on security and economy, would be held for two days on September 28 and 29, concurrently, in the two states.

Ogbonnia said: “Both events are very dear to Ndigbo and the South East zone. That is why we have decided to host both events concurrently to ensure massive attendance by our people.

“Accordingly, the programmes for both events have been structured to accommodate the schedules of our governors and our eminent sons and daughters who will be attending from far and near.

“On September 28, all of us will be in Owerri for the first day of the summit, which will start by 10:00 a.m. By 4:00 p.m. the same day, the first programme of Igbo Day 2023, a public lecture, will be held at the Old Governors Lodge, Enugu.”

Ogbonnia stressed that the summit will continue in Owerri on Friday, September 29, with breakaway sessions on security, economy and related issues by only invited stakeholders, professionals, technocrats and experts. He explained that on the same day, the grand finale of Igbo Day will continue in Enugu for other Igbo sons and daughters.

Meanwhile, an Igbo group, Njiko Igbo Forum, has accused South East governors of being insensitive, saying that scheduling a security and economic summit on a day reserved for Igbo Day celebration is an insult to Igbo people.

Although, Ohanaeze, through its President General, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, had said that the two events would run concurrently, the group, however, said that the action is an affront on Ndigbo.

National Convener of Njiko Igbo, Rev. Okechukwu Obioha, stated, in Enugu, that Igbo Day had always been held every September 29, wondering why the current crop of governors are indifferent to it.
