Osun court sentences three to death for armed robbery, murder

Justice Adedapo Adenijin of Osun State High Court sitting in Ile-Ife, yesterday, sentenced three persons to death for conspiracy, armed robbery, and murder.

They are: Jelili Kareem, Oludayo Oludele, and Awodeji Muyiwa. The convicts committed the offences on January 28, 2020, at Omo West Area, Osogbo, the state capital.

They were said to have robbed and killed one Adebayo Mukaila.They were later arrested and charged to court for armed robbery, including unlawful possession of firearms.

According to the prosecuting counsel from the state’s Ministry of Justice, Muyiwa Ogunleye and Ibukun Adeoye, the offences contravened Sections 324 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 34, Vol 2, Laws of Osun, 2002; Sections 6(b), 1(2)(a)&(b) and 27(1)(b)(ii) of the Robbery & Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap RII, Law of Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

They called four witnesses and tendered various exhibits in support of the case. However, counsel to the convicts, who had pleaded not guilty upon their arraignment, Adeshina Olaniyan, M. O. Adedokun, Folashade Ipede, and Sulaiman Akano, also gave evidence in their defence and called no additional witnesses, aside from the accused persons.

Delivering his judgement, Justice Adeniji held that the prosecution proved all the ingredients of the offences against the defendants beyond reasonable doubt. Adeniji found the three defendants guilty of the charges, convicted them accordingly, and sentenced them to death.

Meanwhile, the fourth defendant, Anifowose Buliaminu, who was charged with receiving stolen property, was discharged for want of diligent prosecution.
