Oyo govt, stakeholders move to curb illegal mining

Nurses, midwives suspend strike

Oyo State Government has joined forces with stakeholders to implement decisive measures across the state to tackle the persistent issue of illegal mining. The resolution was reached during a meeting convened by the Oyo State Mineral Development Agency in Ibadan, bringing together traditional rulers, security agencies, and various stakeholders.

The Director-General of the agency, Abiodun Oni, emphasised the need for sustainable solutions to address the challenges posed by illegal mining, including environmental degradation and security threats in mining communities.

In another development, the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Oyo State chapter, has called off its indefinite strike. This was contained in a letter addressed to Chairman of Oyo State Hospital Management Board, Dr Akin Fagbemi.

The letter, jointly signed by the state’s Chairman of NANNM, Samuel Adeyemi and Secretary, Emmanuel Aina, reads in part: “We write to inform you that the leadership of NANNM, Oyo State chapter, has approved the suspension of our indefinite strike for one month.

“This is to allow for the implementation of the remaining approved agitations.

“In the light of the above, all our members across the state have been directed to resume back to their duty posts from Wednesday, July 24, 2024.”

In his brief remarks, Fagbemi lauded the efforts of Governor SeyiMakinde, who he said, had assured the nurses of the implementation of their demands.
