Police arrest officer for defiling 17-year old girl

The Lagos State Police Command said it has placed under arrest one of its personnel who was accused of defiling a 17-year old girl.

The Lagos State Police spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the officer’s arrest in a statement on Sunday, adding that the command will commence a full-scale investigation.

“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Adegoke Fayoade, meanwhile, directed a full-scale and thorough investigation into the allegation,” Hundeyin wrote on X.

Hundeyin assured the public that there is absolutely no attempt at a cover-up as such hideous acts are at variance with the code of conduct and professional ethics of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

He stated that to this end, CP Fayoade once again assures Nigerians that the officer would be dealt with in accordance with police regulations and the law if found culpable.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) had in a referral letter dated July 1, 2024, reported the rape incident addressed to CP Fayoade.

“Our office refers 17-year-old (name withheld), to you for your kind assistance. A mandated reporter alleged that the girl was defiled by a police officer, who works with Ogudu Police Station, Ojota on Saturday, June 29, 2024,” the letter read.

“The allegations levied against the officer constitute the offenses of defilement, sexual assault, and indecent practices punishable under the Child’s Rights Law of Lagos State (2015) and the Criminal Law of Lagos State (2015). We would appreciate it if this case is handled with the utmost urgency.”

In his reaction to the issue on X, the spokesman of the Nigerian Police Force, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said justice will be done.

“The Lagos State command has waded into this and taken necessary steps. The command will speak to this. I have asked the PPRO @BenHundeyin to address it and make a press release on it.

“We shall get to the root of the matter. The Force Headquarters (FHQ) in Abuja will do a follow-up on the case, too. We assure you all of justice.”
