DG of DSS, Lawal Musa Daura

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has commended President Muhammadu Buhari and the Acting President Yemi Osinbanjo for acting swiftly to end threats to the nation’s democracy.

In a statement yesterday by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko and National Media Affairs Director, Zainab Yusuf, the group said the dismissal of Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura, is one of the best things that have happened in the last three years.

It, however, urged the presidency and the relevant agencies to prosecute Daura for treason and attempted takeover of government. We are delighted to learn that Osinbajo, acting on directives, has removed head of the DSS from office for the illegal invasion of the National Assembly, which amounted to a travesty of the rule of law.

“Th presidency’s action has indeed prevented the imminent collapse of constitutional democracy, which the invasion of the National Assembly by armed security forces meant. We must safeguard the nation’s democracy,” the statement reads.

HURIWA cited Section 1 and 4 of the constitution, which stated, among others, that the constitution is supreme and its provisions shall have binding force on all authorities and persons throughout the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

It also stated that the legislative powers shall be vested in a National Assembly for the federation, which shall consist of a Senate and a House of Representatives.

The National Assembly shall have powers to make laws for the peace, order and good government of the federation or any part thereof with respect to any matter included in the Exclusive Legislative List set out in Part 1 of the second schedule of the constitution.
