The Labour Party has alerted the Nigerian Police to a potential security threat posed by Joe Ajaero and his Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)/National Transition Committee (NTC).

In an open letter to the Inspector General of Police, Abayomi Arabambi, who claims to be the party’s National Publicity Secretary, accused Ajaero’s group of planning to forcibly take over the Labour Party and use it as a tool for a violent political insurrection.

According to him, this could lead to civil and ethnic unrest in Nigeria. The party, therefore, urged the Inspector General to take decisive action to prevent this from happening and to protect the country’s democracy.

Arabambi explained in the letter that the party had previously raised concerns about Ajaero’s activities on August 13, 2024, accusing him of turning the NLC/NTC into a security threat to Nigeria’s existence. He expressed belief that Ajaero’s actions are unconstitutional and contravene trade union and miscellaneous acts.

The letter therefore called on the Inspector General of Police to intervene and prevent what could be a potentially disastrous situation for Nigeria.

The letter read: “I am writing to you today as a concerned citizen of Nigeria and as the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party. I am compelled to bring to your attention a pressing matter that threatens the unity and stability of our country.

“On August 13, 2024, our party raised concerns about Joe Ajaero and his National Labour Congress (NLC)/National Transition Committee (NTC) posing a security threat to Nigeria’s existence. They are planning to forcibly take over the Labour Party through unconstitutional means, aided by Chief Femi Falana, SAN, in contravention of trade union acts and miscellaneous acts.

“The primary objective of Joe Ajaero’s NLC/NTC is to use the Labour Party as a tool for a violent political insurrection, thereby plunging Nigeria into civil and ethnic war. This is unacceptable, and we urge you to take decisive action to prevent this from happening.

“We implore you to intervene and protect the sanctity of our democracy, ensuring that the rule of law prevails. The time to act is now.”
