LP drops Abure, appoints Usman, Nwokocha to lead 29-man caretaker committee
Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in 2023, Peter Obi, joined Abia State Governor in Umuahia, yesterday, to confirm Julius Abure’s exit as chairman of the party.
The party, after its special meeting in Abia Government House, appointed former Minister of Finance, Senator Esther Usman, as Chairman of its Caretaker Committee.
The new leadership, charged with the responsibilities of rescuing the party from its current leadership crisis, will have 27 other members making it a 29-member caretaker committee.
Usman, who represented Kaduna South in the Senate from 2011 to 2015, will lead the committee in reorganising the party and setting it on a path to electoral success.
The committee has 90 days to complete its assignment, which includes organising a convention to elect new leadership from the ward to the national levels.
The stakeholders also appointed the immediate-past Senate Minority Deputy Leader, Darlington Nwokocha, from Abia Central, as Secretary of the committee.
They also dissolved the national and state working committees.
The meeting was also attended by Obi’s running mate in 2023, Datti Ahmed; Lagos State governorship candidate in 2023, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour and Anambra Senator, Victor Umeh.
