The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended Senator Dino Melaye, a prominent member, over allegations of anti-party activities.

The suspension, as revealed in a letter on Friday, was enacted by the ward party executive committee in Ayetoro/Iluagba Ward 1. The decision followed a review of the report submitted by a disciplinary committee set up to investigate Melaye’s actions.

Melaye’s recent conduct was reportedly considered detrimental to the party’s interests and unity, leading to the decision to suspend him.

Melaye’s suspension follows a pattern within the PDP, which has previously taken similar actions against members accused of anti-party activities. The Guardian reports that Peter Babalola, a chieftain from Osun State, was suspended in August 2024 for alleged anti-party activities and for not attending party meetings for two years.

Also a former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, was suspended by the Benue PDP over similar allegations.

The party also recently summoned Senator Gabriel Suswam and other members in Benue State over alleged gross misconduct and anti-party activities. The resolution to suspend Melaye stated:

“Senator Dino Melaye’s conduct has brought embarrassment and disrepute to the party, and his continued membership is no longer tenable. Therefore, the Ward party exco hereby suspends Dino Melaye from the Peoples Democratic Party, effective immediately. The suspension is in line with provisions of Article 59 (1) of the PDP constitution which empowers the Ward party excos to take disciplinary actions against erring members.”
