Amidst opposition from a section of Nigerians, the House of Representatives has expressed its resolve to pass the controversial tax reform Bills initiated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Tajudeen Abass dropped the hint Tuesday in a welcome address to the lawmakers on resumption from the Christmas and New Year recess.

The House Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, who delivered the address on his behalf, maintained that the legislative agenda in 2025 will prioritise the passage of the Appropriation Bill and the Tax Reform Bills.

The Speaker remarked that both Bills remain pivotal to economic recovery and fiscal stability adding the reforms are essential for broadening the tax base, improving compliance, and reducing dependency on external borrowing.

“The House will ensure that these reforms are equitable and considerate of the needs of all Nigerians, particularly the most vulnerable. As we engage with the budget and other legislative priorities, we must remain meticulous in our scrutiny, ensuring that every proposal aligns with national objectives and delivers tangible benefits to the citizenry,” he said.

The Speaker stated that the planned Citizens’ Town Hall on the budget will further reinforce transparency and inclusivity in the decision-making processes of the House of Representatives.

He said the Constitutional Review Committee, under the leadership of Kalu, would ensure extensive consultations and rigorous review of over 350 memoranda to address longstanding governance challenges and promote inclusivity, equity, and accountability.

Besides constitutional amendments, he said the House remains committed to advancing legislative frameworks that address critical national issues, including gender equality, electoral reform, and energy infrastructure.

The Speaker reiterated the House’s resolve to continue to engage constructively with other branches of government to achieve the shared aim of national progress as such partnership, built on mutual respect and a common vision, is essential for addressing the complex challenges the nation confronts.

He added: “As we commence this legislative year, let us renew our commitment to the principles of service, equity, and progress. Nigerians have legitimate expectations, and rightly so. Our citizens aspire to a safer, more prosperous nation, where opportunities flourish, and governance reflects the highest standards of integrity and accountability.

“We should embrace these expectations not as burdens but as the driving force behind our collective mission. By working with purpose, unity, and resolve, we can transform challenges into opportunities and aspirations into realities.”
