Rivers APC says Fubara’s budget presentation violates legal process
The Rivers State All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s budget presentation, saying it violates the legal processes of the state.
Fubara signed the ₦1.188 trillion 2025 budget into law, following its passage by a controversial three-member legislative assembly led by Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo.
The presentation, according to the APC, violates court rulings and bypasses established governance protocols.
The APC referenced a previous ruling by Justice James Omotosho, which mandated that budgets be presented to the Assembly under Martins Amaewhule, the legally recognised Speaker.
APC Chairman Emeka Okocha described Fubara’s actions as a blatant disregard for the rule of law, stating, “It is unimaginable that a governor with such a rich background in finance and governance would sidestep legal processes.”
Okocha accused the governor of deepening divisions in the state’s legislature, adding that Fubara had missed an opportunity to promote unity in the new year.
However, the governor dismissed the allegations, maintaining that Oko-Jumbo’s Assembly is the legitimate legislative body and criticising the opposing faction for what he termed a misguided journey.
Fubara said, “We have only one Assembly, and that Assembly is headed by Rt. Hon. Victor Oko-Jumbo. We’ve given enough room for peace, and there is no going back.”
He assured Rivers residents that his administration remains focused on delivering the promises outlined in the 2025 budget, with a particular emphasis on education, healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure.
“Every projection in the budget will be released to bring hope and a better life to the people of Rivers State,” the governor said.
Speaker Oko-Jumbo commended Fubara for his achievements, highlighting improved infrastructure, healthcare, and social welfare under his administration.
He lauded the governor’s commitment to workers, referencing the payment of ₦100,000 Christmas bonuses and the approval of an ₦85,000 minimum wage, positioning Fubara as a leader who prioritises the well-being of the people.
The ₦1.188 trillion budget, representing a significant increase from previous years, aims to achieve exponential growth in the state.
House Leader Hon. Sokari Goodboy Sokari expressed optimism that the projections would bring progress and comfort to Rivers residents, showcasing the impact of good governance.
