A global multi-faith alliance of grassroots religious organisation, Green Faith international network has called for the implementation of Lagos State’s climate action plan.
They also made case for the protection of Lagos coastline and communities livelihoods from unsustainable industrial sand dredging or mining.
The group made this call at a one-day awareness programme to educate the public in taking care of their environment.
A retired judge, at the Judicial Service Commission, Mrs. Christiana Dosunmu, canvassed the environment to be taken care of. “We don’t think of the negative impact on the way we handle our environment and that is why we are having these impacts on the environment.
“The nature that we are supposed to take care of is now fighting back because man has destroyed the original plan of God.”
Dosunmu stressed that people at the grassroots should know the importance of taking care of their environment so as to have fewer health problems.
Also, the chairman of Lagos State Urban Forest and Animal Shelter Initiative (LUFASI), Mr. Desmond Majekodunmi, said flood is the most urgent environmental challenge that needs to be taken care of because it’s a symptom of climate change.
Majekodunmi urged religious leaders to examine their scriptures, bring out those aspects in the scripture that human beings have the role of taking care of other creations.
He added that there is no religion in the world that allows one to destroy the environment as the creation is life support for humans.
The media coordinator, Muhammed Almahroof said grassroots religious groups will no longer accept vague rhetoric by politicians, financial leaders, industry and faith leaders.
