80 hearty cheers to community leader, Sokunbi
The family of Sokunbi in Ogere Remo, Ogun State, is in a festive mood, as their father, grandfather and community leader, Chief Aare Engineer Johnson Oyetunde Sokunbi turned 80 this month. The elder statesman and retired engineer was born into the family of Ambali Sobayo Sokunbi and Princess Ajibola Sokunbi on February 7, 1941. He attended, Christ Anglican School between 1946 and 1954; Modern School Shagamu from 1955-1957 and Teacher Training College Iperu, (1960-1961).
In 1965, he travelled to the Federal Republic of Germany under the German Government Technical Training Programme scholarship where he obtained a Master degree in Automobile Technical Programme in Kiel, West Germany Heide. Worked in Mercedes workshop in Neumunster in Germany and later relocated to London.
In 1969, he worked in London Borough of Lambech Engineering division and came back to Nigeria in 1970, worked briefly in Mandelas Ebute Metta as workshop Manager between 1972 and 1975. He established Remo Motors Nigeria Limited and in 1975, he joined Volkswagen of Nigeria as a workshop manager, later Engineering Consultant to an Insurance Company.
He was a consultant to NICON Insurance and Nigeria French Insurance, president of the Nigerian German Association, a Commandant of Federal Road Safety Commission Special Marshal Unit 099 RS4 Nigeria. He was also chairman, Federation of Automobile Experts in Nigeria and President of media based Associate Publishers of Autonews.
Sokunbi established several repair workshops in Lagos and Ogun State respectively. A member of SDP caretaker committee in Remo Ogun State, he later joined PDP, and then APC where he was Chairman at Omoilu Foundation in Ogun State. From 2001 till date, he established commercial activities at Ogere former tollgate area. He was also president of Ifelodun (Ogere Remo Co-operative Multipurpose Society Limited).
A consultant to Lagos Urban Bus Association and Ogun State transport cooperative society Limited, he was the head, Odufolakun descendant Shagamu, the Baale of Gbemisoro Community in Shagamu interchange Lagos/Ibadan Express Road. The Aare of Ogere community, Idarika Community, Lowosiwu and Iraye Ogere, baba Sokunbi is an achiever, happily married, blessed with wonderful children, in-laws and grandchildren.
