Showcasing the uniqueness of the African haute couture, the 2024 Africa Fashion Week Nigeria (AFWN), in partnership with Sterling Bank, held its 10th edition during the week with a summit themed, “African Fashion and Economic impact on Art, Music, Film and Tech,” looked at those things that make the African fashion industry thick.
Reaching each day’s climax with the evening runway shows that left fashion enthusiasts and industry stakeholders in awe, the three day event, which held at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island Lagos, brought together industry experts, thought leaders, and creatives that discussed the vast opportunities and challenges facing the African fashion industry, while featuring other line up programmes including exhibitions.
The event also featured an emerging designers’ competition, as Adesua Ella Impens of Lambert Fashion won and received her award, a Staycation at KAP Academy courtesy Sterling Bank. She also got an all-expense-paid trip to showcase at Africa Fashion Week London 2025.
Remarking on the emerging designer’s competition, the founder of Africa Fashion Week Nigeria and London, Olori Ronke Ademiluyi Ogunwusi, said: “This competition is part of AFWN’s ongoing mission to spotlight and nurture fresh talent, giving young African designers a global platform to showcase their work. AFW has been at the forefront of promoting African fashion globally, providing a platform for young designers to showcase their work. AFW is more than just a platform – it’s a catalyst for youth employment, as the value chain of the fashion industry is huge. AFWN is a platform that showcases the incredible potential of African fashion and how we use fashion as an instrument of youth empowerment and job creation. This year alone, both AFWNigeria and London have employed over 1000 young people in the creative sector to work with us at our fashion weeks, including students from Yaba College of Technology in Nigeria and Manchester University in the UK.
“Through fashion education, AFW can equip young people with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the industry. To help us achieve this, we have just signed a partnership with the prestigious London School of Economics for an executive masterclass programme that can provide valuable guidance and support that Nigerian and African designers’ need. AFW also plays a vital role in preserving and promoting our rich cultural heritage. We showcase traditional craftsmanship and techniques that help preserve our cultural identity and promote African fashion globally,” she said.
The event was graced by esteemed guests including His Imperial Majesty, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, Ambassador Plenipotentiary of AFWN & London; Oba Saheed Elegusi, Kusenla III; Her Excellency, the First Lady of Kwara State, and Global Matron of AFWN and London, Prof. Dr. Olufolake Abdul Rasaq; the Former First Lady of Ekiti State and Olori Mariam Ogunwusi, among others.
