It is wedding season and, of course, brides and grooms are the attractions. But in this part of the world, the aso-ebi (uniform dress) ladies also perceive themselves as a crucial part of the occasion, hence their mission to dress stunning for the ceremony.

Wedding planners now go all out for beautiful aso-ebi fabrics because how colourful a typical Nigerian wedding ceremony would be depends on the aso-ebi fabrics selected for the event.

Another interesting thing is that Nigerian wedding planners tend to go with certain fabric trends, sometimes for an entire year or a couple. These fabric trends are basically lace, Ankara, George, aso-oke and velvet (Akwa oche). At a point, lace aso-ebi was phased out, perhaps due to quality and price, giving room for Ankara and other indigenous fabrics to take over. But the story has changed since late 2021 and early 2022 as lace is back in the wedding aso-ebi train. It is not just any lace but sequin.

Looking at women in this glittering fabric, you’d see why sequin lace fabric has stolen the aso-ebi show as it bestows elegance, class and luxury irrespective of the designer’s styling – long or short gown, skirt and top, jumpsuit etc.

The new fabric trend for wedding is mostly worn by women. Men are still looking stunning in their plain senator fabric style and a mix of aso-oke as cap or design touch.
