Visionary CEOs who shaped Nigeria’s economy in 2024 (1)

Prince Nnamdi Ekeh Driving Konga To Boost e-Commerce, Grow Businesses

PRINCE NNAMDI EKEH is a visionary and accomplished business executive. He has been the Group CEO of Konga Online Nigeria Limited—Nigeria’s leading online marketplace—since October 2022. Joining Konga in May 2018 as Group Co-CEO, he has driven his over 1,000 team members to take the company to a level of profitability after years of significant losses.
Before joining Konga, Ekeh was the Founder/CEO of Yudala Limited, Nigeria’s first omni-channel retailer, which captured a significant market share within its first year of operation. His leadership facilitated the strategic merger of Yudala and Konga, creating a powerhouse in Nigeria’s e-commerce industry.
Deeply committed to community development, Ekeh has demonstrated this through his work with the Leo-Stan Ekeh Foundation, which has positively impacted over 250,000 people in the eastern part of Nigeria.
Ekeh’s contributions to Nigeria’s e-commerce space have earned him numerous recognitions and awards. In December 2024, he won ThisDay Newspapers’ Young Global Leaders of Commemoration Award. He was featured in the March 2022 edition of Forbes Africa Magazine and was also included in the Top 100 Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) list. Furthermore, he won the Disruptive Youth Entrepreneur of the Year award at the Titans of Tech Awards in 2017.
In a recent interview with Cyril Anyika Jnr, Ekeh shared his relentless drive to position Konga as the go-to platform for e-commerce in Nigeria. He emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation, customer satisfaction, and fostering a thriving digital economy. With his extensive experience in business development, strategic planning, and operations, Ekeh is passionate about strengthening the tech ecosystem and empowering future founders.
Konga has grown into one of Nigeria’s biggest e-commerce and fintech giants under your leadership. What is been your driving force in steering the company to its present level?
It is a mixture of vision, resilience and an obsession to solve problems. Nigeria is a complex market— full of opportunities, but not without its fair share of hurdles. My job has been to ensure that Konga remains a trusted brand that delivers value, whether through e-commerce, digital payments or through logistics. We had to be bold, challenge the status quo and quickly adapt to market realities. Above all, it is the people — our team, our customers and our partners — who keep pushing us forward.
How has Konga stayed afloat in the nation’s economic headwinds?
Tough times demand smart decisions. Inflation and forex fluctuations are beyond our control, but what we can control is how we respond.
On efficiency, we optimised our operations to keep costs low without compromising service quality. On innovation, we strengthened KongaPay, expanded our logistics network, and introduced solutions that help businesses and consumers navigate these challenges. On customer-centricity, we ensured that every naira spent on our platform stretched further, giving shoppers the best deals and businesses the best payment tools.
Nigeria’s economy is unpredictable, but our job is to stay ahead of the curve.
KongaPay has become a major player in the digital payment space. With Nigeria pushing for a cashless economy, where do you see the future of fintech, and how would KongaPay fit into the vision?
The future of fintech in Nigeria is merchant-driven, borderless and deeply integrated into everyday commerce. It is no longer just about digitising payments; it is about empowering businesses — whether SMEs, large enterprises, or international traders — to scale seamlessly.
KongaPay is built around this vision. We have evolved beyond a wallet solution into a comprehensive payment ecosystem that enables businesses to grow. Our focus is clear: making payments seamless for merchants. This is how it works:
For POS services: we provide businesses with reliable POS terminals that don’t just process payments but also offer value-added services like airtime top-ups and bill payments.
For Loans and Credit Facilities: we understand that access to capital is a major challenge, so we are building financial products that allow merchants to access short-term credit for business expansion.
For Cross-border Payments: with more Nigerian businesses trading internationally, KongaPay facilitates fast and affordable cross-border transactions, removing friction in receiving and sending funds.
For Payment Links and Gateway Services: whether it is a small vendor on Instagram or a large online retailer, we offer easy-to-use payment links and gateway integrations, ensuring businesses get paid effortlessly.
As Nigeria accelerates its cashless agenda, KongaPay is positioning itself as the go-to fintech partner for merchants, helping them thrive in an increasingly digital economy. The goal is simple; if you sell, KongaPay ensures you get paid — fast, securely and without hassle.
What makes KongaPay different from other players in the market, and how do you keep your brand on top of its game?
We do not just sell products — we build trust. E-commerce is a marathon and not a sprint. Konga stands out because we focus on reliability, affordability, and excellence in service.
What gives us the edge?
We have Omnichannel Strength, unlike many players. We combine online convenience with physical store presence, offering customers multiple ways to shop. We have Fintech and Logistics Synergy, KongaPay and our in-house delivery network mean that payments and fulfilment are seamless.
With our Customer-first Approach, we listen, adapt and deliver. Nigerians want affordability, speed and authenticity — we make sure they get them.
At Konga, we do not just chase market share; we create lasting relationships with our customers, which is our real competitive advantage.
Nigerian shoppers are evolving, becoming more tech-savvy, more demanding and more conscious of value. How is Konga meeting these consumers’ behaviours or expectations?
Nigerians are among the smartest shoppers in the world. They compare, negotiate and expect value for money and rightly so. To meet their expectations, we have to double down on three things:
Affordability: we have secured better supplier deals and improved our pricing strategy. We also partner with top global Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM’s) including Starlink, HP, Itec, Samsung, Apple and many more to ensure our customers always get the best product at the best price.
Secondly, we have a faster delivery system. Our logistics network ensures that customers get whatever they need when they need them.
The third is our Smarter Shopping Experience. From AI-driven recommendations to better payment options via KongaPay, we are making shopping more seamless.
Today’s consumers want convenience, speed, and trust. Our job is to give them all three.
As a young and dynamic CEO, you have built a culture of innovation and excellence within Konga. What is your leadership style and how do you motive or inspire your team?
I lead with clarity, accountability and a bit of fun. I believe in setting clear vision, empowering people to take ownership, and ensuring that we celebrate the wins — big or small. Konga thrives on a culture of bold thinking and fast execution. I encourage my team to question the norm, experiment and push boundaries. We fail fast, learn faster, and move forward stronger. At the end of the day, leadership is about people. If your team is motivated, innovation becomes second nature and excellence becomes the standard.
Looking ahead, what is next for Konga? What is the big vision and how do you want your leadership to be remembered in shaping Nigeria’s digital economy?
The big vision! To make Konga the heartbeat of Nigeria’s digital economy. We are not just in e-commerce and fintech. We are in the business of empowering businesses and consumers through technology. From expanding our payments infrastructure to strengthening our logistics network and scaling financial services, Konga is building an ecosystem that simplifies commerce and finance for millions.
As for my legacy, I want to be remembered as a leader who made digital transactions in Nigeria effortless, secure and accessible to all. If years from now, people say, ‘Konga changed the way Nigerians shop, pay and grow businesses,’ then I would say we did something right.

CypherCrescent has become a leading company in data analytics and digital transformation in the oil and gas sector. How did you achieve this great height?
CypherCrescent was founded in March 2012 with a clear vision to revolutionise asset management operations in the oil and gas sector by developing cutting-edge solutions to enhance efficiency, increase production, improve safety, and boost profitability. The journey began with a focus on creating fit-for-purpose solutions to address specific industry challenges through intensive research and innovation. This value is prioritised in our talent recruitment, retention, and reward systems. Another crucial pillar of our culture of excellence is continuous innovation. This enables us to develop solutions that are suitable for present and future needs.
We recognised that sustaining this strategy could be capital intensive. Therefore, we have adopted the Penta Helix Ecosystem model which allows us to create strategic partnerships with carefully selected companies to deliver superior value to our clients. These have helped us to navigate business uncertainties and build resilience to mitigate operational and market risks.
Furthermore, we are extending our services to other African markets, aiming to apply our vast digital transformation expertise to boost corporate innovation in the continent.
How is CypherCrescent investing in local talents to develop the next generation of professionals in this field?
CypherCrescent is deeply committed to developing local talents and expertise across Africa. Since its inception, we have been focusing on practical, industry-driven internship programmes for young and prospective professionals. Chinwe Uzoho Driving Fintech Across African Borders To Boost Businesses, Economy
Chinwe Uzoho is the Regional Managing Director, Network International. With over 30 years of experience in fintech and retail banking across the West and Central Africa sub-regions, she is seriously driving the digitalisation of African economy to boost business across the continent. In this chat with Cyril Anyika Jnr, she unveils her challenges and strategies to overcome them.
With your background in fintech and retail banking, how are you navigating the changing financial landscape in the West and Central Africa sub-regions?
Navigating the dynamic financial landscape of the West and Central Africa sub-regions requires adaptability, innovation and a keen understanding of the market. My leadership approach is centred around fostering agility, leveraging technology and driving financial inclusion. Throughout my career, I have championed digital transformation, leading initiatives that simplify payments, expand financial access, and enhance customer experiences.
My leadership journey has been shaped by resilience, adaptability and a passion for driving financial inclusion. Inspired by my late father’s career in banking, I pursued a path that allowed me to transform traditional financial services into innovative digital solutions. Having worked across investment banking, retail banking, and now fintech, I have embraced continuous learning and strategic innovation to stay ahead of others. As a leader, I am very intentional and dynamic, so that, I can create an environment that enables growth and transparency.
One of my strategies is to foster innovation, build resilience, empower the team, and cultivate a culture of continuous learning and strategic partnerships. At Network International, we recognise that the future of fintech in Africa is digital. My focus has been on building scalable and secure payment solutions that empower businesses and individuals alike. By fostering collaboration among banks, fintech and regulatory bodies, with this, we are accelerating economic growth and ensuring that financial systems remain resilient and inclusive.
Having led digital transformation efforts in banking and fintech, what innovations have had the greatest impact on your career and how do you keep yourself ahead of the curve?
Innovation is the heartbeat of the fintech industry and I have always sought to push boundaries. One of the most impactful transformations I led was the development of instant digital lending solutions, eliminating long approval times and expanding access to credit. To stay ahead, I prioritise industry research, upskilling and mentorship. I believe that true leadership in fintech requires not only technical expertise but also the ability to anticipate change and embrace emerging technology.
Expanding businesses across different African markets could be challenging, how can you overcome these challenges?
Africa’s financial landscape is diverse, and expanding operations across multiple markets presents regulatory, infrastructural and operational hurdles. One of my biggest challenges has been ensuring that digital payment systems are adaptable, yet compliant with varying regulatory environments. I have overcome these challenges by fostering strong partnerships, engaging in proactive dialogue with regulators, and adopting an inclusive leadership style that values cultural and market-specific nuances. Resilience and strategic problem-solving have been crucial in successfully driving Network International’s regional growth.
As a strong supporter of women in fintech and leadership, how do you think organisations can empower more women to take leadership roles?
Earlier in my career, I believed I had to be a “superwoman” to succeed until I realised that leadership is not about perfection, but about confidence, self-awareness and strategic positioning. The finance industry has traditionally been male-dominated, but this narrative is changing; thanks to women who have continued to break barriers. I am deeply committed to mentorship and sponsorship, recognising that women need strong networks to thrive. I actively support initiatives that create opportunities for female professionals in fintech, advocating for interviews from The Guardian Newspapers to ensure that women are not just included, but also empowered. Organisations must go beyond diversity statements and actively invest in leadership development programmes, equal pay structures and mentorship pipelines to support women in finance. At Network International, I mentor young women, helping them navigate industry challenges with confidence and resilience.
Looking back, what legacy do you hope to leave in the fintech and financial sector? And what are your next steps, as a leader, to shape Africa’s digital economy?
Looking ahead, my goal is to leave a lasting impact on Africa’s financial sector by championing digital transformation, financial inclusion and leadership excellence. I want to see a future where financial services are accessible to everyone, where technology empowers, rather than excludes, and where more women rise to leadership roles in fintech. Beyond business growth, I remain committed to fostering an ecosystem of innovation, collaboration, and mentorship — ensuring that Africa’s digital economy is built on strong, inclusive foundations. I am honoured to be recognised among the top 100 iconic CEOs and remain dedicated to driving meaningful change in Africa’s financial landscape.

“Under my leadership, VFD Microfinance Bank has undergone a significant transformation towards profitability between FY2023 and FY2024. We have also strengthened our risk management framework to ensure sustainable growth and stability”.
Several key factors differentiate VFD Microfinance Bank from others in the industry. VFD Microfinance Bank stands out as a fully digital and customer-centric institution, providing seamless banking solutions that cater to individuals, SMEs, and businesses. Their commitment to financial inclusion ensures that underserved communities have access to essential banking services, while strong financial backing allows the bank to structure and manage large-scale transactions with confidence. VFD MFB, doesn’t just provide banking services; they empower businesses and individuals to grow financially.
According to Awofisibe, the Nigerian banking sector is dynamic but presents several challenges that require strategic management. Regulatory and compliance issues necessitate agility; to address this, the bank established a robust framework to stay ahead of regulatory requirements. Cybersecurity threats, such as phishing and identity theft, pose significant risks; therefore, they have invested heavily in cybersecurity measures to protect customers’ data. Access to capital remains a major challenge for SMEs, prompting the bank to introduce tailored loan products with flexible repayment plans to support their growth. Customer trust and the adoption of digital banking are key concerns, leading them to invest in financial education and digital literacy initiatives to drive engagement. Economic volatility and inflation pose risks, but through data analytics and strategic financial planning, VFD has proactively mitigated market fluctuations, ensuring stability for customers and stakeholders. Additionally, the emigration of skilled workers, known as the ‘Japa’ phenomenon, has impacted the industry’s skill base; and they address this by investing in training and development to retain talent.
“Under my leadership, VFD Microfinance Bank has achieved significant milestones that have strengthened our position in the financial sector. We are in the final stages of securing a national license after a successful capital raise in 2023, showcasing shareholders’ confidence in the business, this will enable us to operate across all states in Nigeria and significantly expand our reach. With Sundry Foods, Ebele Enunwa Fetes Clients, Dominate Culinary Market

Ebele Enunwa, the MD/CEO of Sundry Foods Limited, is a creative business leader, whose ingenuity and hindsight led him to the culinary and hospitality business, where he is making waves. The chartered accountant cum investment banker turned hospitality professional is driving his business to provide services for the nation’s diverse markets.
How has your passion contributed to your success in your career?
My passion and motivation are driven by a deep sense of purpose and the desire to make a tangible impact on the lives of people through the work I do. I am passionate about solving problems and creating value, and this has been my guide as an entrepreneur and business leader.
When I moved to Port Harcourt and saw the gap in the market for the provision of out-of-the-home quality meals, it became clear to me that there was a need to meet in the city and I jumped on it. My motivation comes from the challenges I encounter and the ability to overcome them.
What was growing up like for you?
I was born in Lagos some 48 years ago. I had my early life education in Surulere, Lagos and my secondary school in Jos, before going to a university in Ilorin. I completed compulsory youth service with Deloitte and qualified as a chartered accountant.
Leaving Deloitte, I joined Investment Banking and Trust Company Limited (IBTC), now known as Stanbic IBTC Bank and handled different responsibilities. In 2001, I was appointed to establish and lead the bank’s regional office in Port Harcourt. It was while in Port Harcourt that I identified the significant gap in the hospitality business, which led to my venturing into the restaurant business.
In 2007, while my business was still at its early stage, I went to the United States to study hospitality management. The knowledge garnered enabled me to incorporate global best practices into the business and to deliver top-notch services to customers.
Today, I am a chartered accountant and an investment banker turned hospitality professional.
Who are your mentors or role models?
My father was my first and has been my greatest influence in my professional life. He was a chartered accountant before me and retired as a partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers. When I was younger, I used to marvel at how people admired him for all he was doing and I desired to be more successful than he was. He instilled in me the spirit of hard work, a passion for excellence, and a desire to succeed beyond measure.
Another influential person in my life is my mother. She was a health administrator whose entrepreneurial spirit also runs me. I admire many others, including Dangote and Tony Elumelu.
As MD/CEO of Sundry Foods, how would you describe your products?
Sundry Foods Limited currently has six major brands operating in the Nigerian market. They are Kilimanjaro, Pizza Jungle, Kiligrill, Sundry Foods Services (SFS), Nibbles Bakery and Nibbles Creamery. Kilimanjaro is our flagship quick service restaurant (QSR) brand. It provides a range of quality Nigerian just as you would want them prepare for you at home. Pizza Jungle is our pizza restaurant brand – Pizza has become a popular food item in every country and appealing to the youth. Kiligrill is our street food brand. It is our attempt at formalising popular Nigerian street food, giving it a professional touch for the discerning customer to enjoy. SFS is our corporate catering brand, which enables us to provide outsourcing services to companies, while Nibbles is our bakery and creamery brand. All these brands make a mark in their different areas of the market.
What are some of the challenges you are facing and how are you overcoming them?
Marketing in the food services industry comes with its own set of challenges, particularly in a diverse and dynamic market like Nigeria. One of the primary challenges has been building and maintaining brand loyalty, especially as new players regularly emerge. To address this, we focus on consistency in quality and customer experience, ensuring that every interaction with our brand leaves a positive and lasting impression.
Another challenge has been to effectively communicate our core values to our audience with their varying preferences. We have tackled this by employing targeted marketing strategies that leverage data-driven insights. Understanding our customers’ needs allows us to tailor our campaigns and messaging, whether through digital platforms, traditional media or community engagement initiatives.
Economic factors, such as inflation and changing consumer purchasing power have also impacted on how our products are perceived and consumed. We respond by creating value-driven promotions and affordable meal options, ensuring that quality is never compromised, irrespective of pricing.
Another is the diversity of the Nigerian market, cultural differences and regional preferences. We are addressing this by offering locally inspired dishes to suit the tastes of different regions.
Lastly, the rise of social media and digital marketing has shifted consumer engagement patterns. To stay ahead, we have continued to invest in our digital platform and actively engage our audience through creative content and interactive campaigns. We are also listening to customers’ feedbacks on our platforms.
By being adaptable, customer-centric, and innovative, we have managed to overcome marketing challenges and continue to grow our presence and influence in the food and hospitality sector.
How do you intend to increase the market reach of your brands?
To do this, we have developed a comprehensive expansion strategy that focuses on both physical presence and digital engagement. We plan to increase our footprint by opening more outlets and touchpoints across the country, particularly in underserved regions. We look forward to doing this in the next three years.
We have also continued to innovate and bring out new products to break into new customer segment.
Furthermore, we are exploring strategic partnerships with delivery platforms, retail chains, and other businesses to extend our reach beyond our physical locations.
Lastly, we are leveraging data-driven insights to understand consumer behaviour and preferences. This approach allows us to make informed decisions on product offerings, pricing, and targeted marketing. Combining all these would take our brands to a greater height and reach more customers.
What advice do you have for aspiring youth professionals?
My advice to them is to develop a strong work ethic and maintain a mindset of continuous learning. The journey to success is rarely a straight path, and there will be challenges along the way. It is important to embrace these challenges as opportunities for growth, rather than obstacles. Stay curious, seek knowledge, be patient and never shy away from the hard work needed to achieve your goals.
Also, build meaningful relationships and surround yourself with people who inspire and challenge you to be better. Networking is crucial, but genuine connections matter more than superficial contacts. Find mentors who can guide you and offer valuable insights from their own experiences.
Also, be adaptable and resilient. The business environment is constantly changing, and your ability to adapt to new situations and bounce back from setbacks will determine your long-term success. Cultivate the habit of setting clear goals and pursuing them with determination and discipline.
Above all, remain humble and committed to your values. Integrity and honesty are non-negotiable, and your reputation will be your most valuable asset throughout your career. Stay focused, stay driven, and remember that consistency over time is what sets successful professionals apart from the rest.

Wasiu Lanre Adeyemo: Implementing Projects, Lifting LUTH To First Class Hospital
From the entrance gate to the walkways and wards, the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, could be visibly seen to regain its sheen. Established in 1962, to provide tertiary specialised services in diagnostics, dentistry, internal medicine and surgery, the hospital was one of the pride and joy of the nation until funding plunged and it suffered long years of infrastructural deficit. But with the coming of Professor Wasiu Lanre Adeyemo, as the Chief Medical Director, all that has changed for good. The wards are now equipped with state-of-the-art medical amenities that are powered by solar energy that runs for 24 hours throughout the week, while various projects are ongoing to provide better services for patients and make the hospital live up to its laid down visions and objectives.
Shedding light on this development, the CMD said, “This hospital is standing on the tripod of patient care, research and training, and we have been doing these to the best of our knowledge. We do more than patient care, because we do research and training. However, without patient care we cannot do any research or training; so, patient care is very essential.”
To boost its patient care, the CMD is holding on to the loins of government and the various projects stand as testaments for this.
Commending the government for increasing funding in the healthcare sector, he said, 62/ 63years ago, when federal hospitals and healthcare centres were about 10 or thereabout, funding was easy, but today the number of teaching hospitals, federal medical centres, and special hospitals under the federal ministry of health and social welfare has increased to about 76 or 77 and this comes with other challenges; despite this funding has increased tremendously to about 800 or 1000 per cent, which has enabled me to embark on different projects.
With the upgrade of all its theatres from renal to gynaecology, oncology, paediatrics, and surgery, among others, the doctors hit the groundwork and carried out two bone marrow transplants, thereby giving those living with sickle cell health challenges the assurance that they could live their lives to the fullest.
Highlighting this, Professor Adeyemo, who has won different awards as a scholar and researcher, said, “This is for the cure of sickle cell,” he continued, “We are the first public hospital in Nigeria to achieve this feat and we want to continue with it. With the success of the operation, LUTH now has a cure for sickle cell health challenges.”
Though, the hospital has been performing wonders in the areas of research and patient care, not many people knew of this until the COVID-19 pandemic, when its staff showed their professionalism in handling emergencies and curtailing the pandemic.
“I managed the COVID-19 pandemic as Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) and one of the lessons I learnt from COVID-19 is that, the best hospital you can have is the one nearest to you because when in need is the hospital that will save your life,” he continued, “many people thought that the virus would kill all Nigerians, but we curtailed it.
“Lagos was most affected, of course, LUTH received the greatest heat. We admitted 1054 patients, the highest any public hospital ever had in the country. Luckily, government had released funds for the renovation of one of the old wards of 120 beds, four levels, and just as the work was completed COVID-19 broke out; so, the facility helped to save a lot of Nigerians and that made many people to further know the importance of LUTH.
“Seeing the important role we played during the pandemic, Airtel came in and renovated Medical Ward A; NNLG handled Ward C and after COVID government tremendously increased budgets for public hospitals across the country,” he revealed.
Since government alone cannot handle the challenges in the healthcare sector, individuals and groups were enjoined to give a helping. Besides this, the CMD and his team embarked on a public-private partnership (PPP) with the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) in cancer management. This partnership has led to the establishment of the best and most equipped Cancer Centre in Nigeria and in the West African sub-region. The Centre boasts of three linear accelerator machines.
According to the multiple award-winning leaders and a member of the Nigerian Academy of Science and other prestigious academies, with the centre, LUTH is now the only hospital in Nigeria with three linear accelerator machines; no other hospital either private or public has such equipment.
“The equipment’s downtime is less than five per cent. With this, many Nigerians who had travelled abroad to treat cancer are now returning home to receive treatment in LUTH and we are also getting referrals from the Republic of Benin, Ghana, Togo, and Cote d’Ivoire among other neighbouring countries to our Cancer Centre.
“Individuals, including Mrs. Amina Attah’s family have donated four floors, 60 bedded Oncology Ward. A family is also renovating the Physiotherapy Centre from one level to two levels apart from equipping it with medical machines worth over N500 million. This will enable us have the best Physiotherapy Centre, probably, in the country.
“Owing to our vision, which has yielded great results, government has now extended this same partnership to other hospitals by establishing 10 more Cancer Centres across the country. We are not just dreaming or projecting, but have also been empowered to train the professionals that would run the various 10 facilities,” he revealed.
With the state-of-the-art equipment in its wards and theatres, highly trained and experienced professionals, and conducive environment that could go for a four-star hotel, one would expect the hospital’s medical bills to be extremely high, but the CMD said the reverse is the case.
“This hospital is heavily subsidised; the services a private hospital may charge N300,000 at LUTH, it may be N50,000. We get our drugs directly from pharmaceutical companies; we buy and also do drug revolving. There are treatments we give here for N20,000, but outside it could go for N150,000 or more.
“Also, children from age bracket 15-16 downwards pay 50 per cent of whatever adults pay and there are also categories of treatment. Since 2007 for example, all cleft treatments have been for free. I am a surgeon and have been a member of the team that handles cleft patients,” he said.
On how LUTH is helping to check medical tourism, Adeyemo noted that with the provision of modern medical infrastructure, and its array of specialists in varied and diverse fields of medicine, the hospital is ready to handle any medical emergencies or problems, stressing that Nigerians should come to LUTH, instead of travelling abroad to spend huge sums of money for what they can get for less in the country.
Despite its size and the huge number of patients — in and out-patients, LUTH still make provisions for some categories of people, celebs and captains of industry, that would want to enjoy some confidentiality.
“We know there are some Nigerians that want to take the benefit of the teaching hospital, which is the best hospital you can have anywhere because we have an array of professionals, but they are worried that they would be disturbed because of their popularity. We have considered such a class of people and have provided private apartments for them, even as in-patient and out-patient. They will have their privacy and all the comforts they need at their own cost. They are free to come with anybody they want to stay with them, including their security men/women,” the CMD said.
Observing that electric power is constituting a clog in the wheel of progress, the CMD jettisoned it for the solar system and with it, the nooks and crannies of the hospital are lighted up, as well as the theatres.
“Our Medical Ward with 120 beds, Surgical Ward 120 beds, Obstetrics and Gynaecology 120 beds, Paediatrics Wards 120 beds, Accident and Emergency (children), and Accident and Emergency Ward (adults) are all covered by solar energy. Others include the Blood Bank, Labour Ward, all the theatres, Alima Attah Oncology Centre, Neonatal Unit and the solar runs for 24 hours throughout the week. Our plan is to cover other areas that have not been reached in this year’s budget,” the CMD informed.
He revealed that government has promised to sufficiently supply LUTH with power, a minimum of two megawatts of solar, adding that government has done this in two hospitals — University Teaching Hospital, Maiduguri and University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. “ Calabar has seven megawatts, so, we are hopeful it will get to us; we only need about four megawatts. We are also looking forward to seeing good-spirited individuals contribute in this direction. We need power, for without electricity power the hospital is useless. The woman who donated the 60-bed Alimat Oncology Unit in January covered the whole building with solar.
“Government may not have done enough, but it has begun the process of funding to change the deficit in infrastructure. In those days the press reported that LUTH was in darkness, honestly speaking LUTH was never in darkness. What happened was that the student hostel had power cut because we were in the process of installing solar. The hospital, today, has 300 streetlights all solar-empowered; so, LUTH can never be in darkness.
Worried that some people say their sick relatives died while they were brought to LUTH, Prof Adeyemo a renowned oral and maxillofacial surgeon, geneticist and scholar, said this would only happen when cases are referred to LUTH at a very critical situation, when the doctors cannot do much to save the patient.
Adeyemo, with his magic wand, is really turning LUTH around for good. He has begun a new project that would provide superlative services for its patients.
“LUTH services are divided into two services, the out and in-patient. Our out-patients are almost as old as the hospital, but government has given us a new outpatient centre. There are five separate buildings with 254 clinic spaces across the main LUTH building; it is like having two hospitals in one. There is going to be a bridge for doctors and nurses, even patients, to move from the main building to the new one and construction works for the project have begun and will be completed before the end of the year.
“ We are also going to have a public Geriatric Centre (Old people Centre) there, to take care of the medical needs of our ageing population, which most times do not have people to help them. In addition to that, we want to create a hospice, especially for those who after receiving treatment find it difficult to go home mainly because they do not have people to take care of them at home. This group of people does not require wards, but a home. This facility will also enable those suffering from terminal illnesses such as cancer to receive their healing because they need prolonged treatment that would be handled by professionals. Such care are given in a hospice and government has made provisions for the construction of the facility in LUTH.

I would emphasize that no success is achieved in isolation. I owe my journey to the support of mentors, colleagues, and partners who have shared in my vision. As a nation, I believe that if we harness our collective potential, we can achieve greatness and set new standards for global excellence.

Can we have an insight into your background?
I was personally exposed to the maritime world at the age of 12 years. However, my professional career officially began with the defunct Nigerian National Shipping Line (NNSL) from 1982 to 1995 where I served as a Radio Electronic Officer onboard foreign going vessels owned by the NNSL. I was appointed and certified marine Safety Radio Surveyor approved by the International Association of Marine Classification Societies for West and Central African states (ABS, DNV, GL, BV, LR& NKK). I was also appointed a Non-Exclusive Marine Radio Surveyor for the Federal Government of Nigeria (NIMASA) in 2001 and I remain so to date. I have surveyed over 800 Merchant Ships and Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODU) in accordance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) SOLAS Regulations within West and Central African Republic. I hold different academic qualifications including Doctor of Business Administration, specializing in Maritime Safety Operations and Management (Honoris Causa) from the Commonwealth University, UK. As an entrepreneur per excellence and a philanthropist who has shown great capacity in leadership, I have also sponsored free maritime safety training for indigenous youths of the Niger Delta and assisted them in gainful employment.
As the CEO of Charkin Maritime & Offshore Safety Centre, can you share with us your vision for the company, and how you’ve been able to drive growth and innovation in the Maritime & Offshore Industry?
My vision is for CHARKIN to be the “one-stop-shop” for quality maritime and offshore oil & gas safety training all around the world. So far I have been able to drive growth and innovation by first of all securing meaningful and long-sustained business partnerships and affiliations with both local and international regulatory bodies such as; OPITO, IMO through the Nigerian Maritime and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Nautical Institute (NI), International Well Control Forum (IWCF), International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC), the Liberian Registry, Bernhard Schulte Ship Management (BSM), and as such we are accredited and approved for training of international standards by the aforementioned organizations. Some of our approved courses include; Dynamic Positioning (Basic, Advanced and DP Vessel Maintainer), Azimuth Stern Drive, GMDSS, ECDIS, High Voltage, IMO Basic and Advanced Mandatory courses, Offshore Basic and Advanced Oil & Gas Courses, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) courses and Welding courses.
What makes your Organization Unique as a Marine, Oil and Gas Training Establishment?
What makes CHARKIN unique is that over the years, we have consistently maintained our objective to build manpower for the National Maritime and Oil & Gas Industry & also for the African region. We have also complimented the efforts of government institutions in providing opportunities for Nigerian youths, by training and empowering them to fill the numerous global job opportunities available in the maritime, oil and gas industries within and outside the shores of Nigeria. By doing so, CHARKIN has successfully been ranked as one of the top facilitators of human capacity development training in Nigeria thereby positioning youths for a highly competitive edge in the maritime and oil & gas industries globally.
Given the peculiarities of the Nigerian business environment, what are the challenges faced in your sector and how have you been able to address those challenges in your organization?
Considering the enormity of our project investments in both the Maritime and Oil & Gas sectors, with the aim of bringing world-class training to our doorstep, the major challenges we face is that we are yet to have some key stakeholders align with and key into these projects. We have painstakingly brought down to Nigeria, world-class training that can only be sourced abroad, with the hope that our people will key into these projects without having to spend huge sums of money to travel abroad for these same trainings.
