The long wait for Team Nigeria’s gold medal in the city of Paris, France, came to an end, yesterday, as Onyinyechi Mark grabbed the nation’s first gold medal at the Paralympics 2024.

After their able body counterparts returned from the city without a single medal, the special athletes have been able to prove that there is ability in disability. So far, they have won three medals at the Paralympics 2024.

Before yesterday’s gold medal celebration, the country athletes had grabbed a silver and bronze at the Games. Team Nigeria’s camp celebrated late into the night, yesterday, as Onyinyechi Mark smashed her own World Record, lifting a breathtaking weight of 147kg.

The Abia State-born Mark lifted 150kg breaking the Paralympic and World records on her way to victory in Paris yesterday. She made history as one of the greatest Powerlifters to come out from Nigeria.

Sports minister, John Owen Enoh described Mark as a gift to the nation.   Before Mark’s historic moment, the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games proved challenging for Team Nigeria in the morning, yesterday, as athletes in athletics and powerlifting missed out on podium finishes.

In the Women’s 400m T54, Hannah Babalola faced tough competition, finishing near the back of the pack in Heat 2. Belgium’s athlete, Bayekula led the race, clocking 52.25 seconds, while Babalola fell short of qualifying for the final.

In Para-Powerlifting, Bose Bejide, competing in the Women’s 50kg category, finished seventh after lifting 100kg.  The event was dominated by Venezuela’s Clara Fuentes, who claimed gold with an impressive 124kg lift.

Nigeria’s shot put hopeful, Goodness Nwachukwu, also put in a solid effort in the Women’s Shot Put F64 final. Nwachukwu threw a distance of 11.49 meters, securing 4th place but just missing out on the bronze.

China’s J. Yao claimed gold with a throw of 12.53 meters, followed by the USA’s A. Middleton (12.19 meters) and China’s Y. Yang (11.77 meters), who took silver and bronze, respectively.
