For a majority of Cameroonians, Sunday’s victory over the Super Falcons by the Indomitable Lionesses in Morocco, was a ‘sweet’ revenge for the defeat they suffered in the hands of Nigeria during the final of the 2016 edition of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations.

Then in 2016, the Super Falcons, led by Coach Florence Omagbemi, forced millions of Cameroonians to early bed with a 1-0 victory scored by Desire Oparanozie.

The defeat at Ahmadou Ahidjo Omnisports Stadium in Yaounde was so painful to the host, Cameroon, as players and officials of Indomitable Lionesses had promised to present the trophy as a “special gift” to President Paul Biya inside the stadium.

That victory on December 3, 2016, gave the Super Falcons their eighth AWCON title. It made Coach Florence Omagbemi the first person to win the continental tournament as both a player and a coach.

Speaking with The Guardian on Monday from Douala, Cameroon, Oni Ladonette Ondasa, a TV presenter, said: “We have finally avenged that painful defeat of December 3, 2016.

“You needed to be here in Douala on Sunday. The celebration went on till late in the night,” she stated.

Another Cameroonian, Augustine, a football fan, said: “From their first match against Malawi, it was obvious the Super Falcons are living in their past glory. The only thing they do these days is to create content by singing, dancing and showing off their hair style. We will continue to celebrate this victory. With the Super Falcons off the way, we are looking forward to seeing the Indomitable Lionesses lift their first AWCON title,” he stated.

The Guardian recalls that the current president of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, was leader of Nigeria’s delegation to the 2016 AWCON in Cameroon.

The team’s defeat on Sunday night, coupled with Flying Eagles’ loss to Burkina Faso at WAFU B tournament intensified the “Gusau Must Go” campaign by many Nigerian football stakeholders worldwide.
