Enyimba on the brink as Black Bulls hit Peoples Elephant 3-0
Former African champions, Enyimba of Aba, are on the brink of elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup following their latest defeat in the competition yesterday by Mozambican outfit, Black Bulls, who defeated the People’s Elephant 3-0.
Yesterday’s game in Maputo was Enyimba’s third game of the group stage of the Confederation Cup, which they began with a 0-2 loss to Al Masry of Egypt in Alexandria before managing a 2-2 draw with another Egyptian club, Zamalek, at home in Uyo.
More interesting for the neutrals is that Enyimba’s latest defeat was orchestrated by two Nigerians, who ran rings around the People’s Elephant in their adopted club’s colours.
Rume Akporoh, a Nigerian, opened scores for the Mozambicans with a header off a corner in the 16th minute; the scores became 2-0 in the 57th when Fidel Sousa netted off a corner kick, before former Flying Eagles star, Ayuba Francis, a substitute, made it 3-0 in the 84th minute.
Enyimba are now rock bottom of Group C with a point, while Black Bulls, who boast a strong Nigerian cast, have four points midway through the group stage of the competition. Both teams will clash again in a reverse tie in Uyo on January 5, 2025.
Egyptian clubs, Zamalek and Al Masry, were also on four points apiece going into last night’s local derby.
Enyimba have been winless for eight matches, as they were held to a goalless draw by Sunshine Stars in a rescheduled Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 16 clash in Aba before yesterday’s game.
Enyimba’s next challenge comes on Match Day 17 of the NPFL, where they will face Niger Tornadoes in Minna.
