Ofugara All-Star Peace, Unity tourney re-ignites Warri’s old football culture
The second edition of Ofugara All-Star Peace and Unity Football Tournament has kicked off in Warri, Delta State, with 20 veteran teams going head-to-head over 17 days to re-ignite old football passion.
This tournament, which has become a cornerstone for the local sports communities in Delta State, features a unique mix of ex-internationals and prominent business leaders, ensuring a high-quality display of footballing prowess.
At the opening ceremony on October 1, the chairman of Uvwie Local Council, Anthony Ofoni, emphasised the critical role sports play in maintaining both physical and mental well-being, especially as individuals grow older.
“Staying active not only keeps the body in shape but also sharpens the mind. It is essential to embrace such initiatives that help prevent the health complications often associated with ageing. Football, in particular, offers the perfect blend of fitness and fun,” he said.
Ofoni also highlighted the power of sports in fostering peace and unity across communities saying: “This tournament is not just about football, it is about building bridges and creating harmony among us. I urge all the teams to play with integrity and sportsmanship. Let this event be a reminder of the love and togetherness we should have for one another as we strive to live in peace.”
He praised the Ofugara family for organising the yearly event, just as he singled out Mr. Silver Ofugara for his unwavering commitment.
“I commend Mr. Silver Ofugara for his dedication in bringing this vision to life. This competition is not just a sporting event, but a movement that enhances community spirit. I encourage private individuals and corporate entities to follow this noble example of using sports to build a better society.”
A representative of the Ofugara family,Antoinette Ofugara, said: “This year’s edition of the tournament is focused on not only promoting physical fitness but also strengthening social bonds, particularly among the elderly population in Delta State. We aim to create a vibrant platform where older citizens can stay active while forging new friendships that will last a lifetime.”
The opening match in Group A saw reigning champions, Uvwie Ex-Players, losing to Ijaw All Stars 2-1.
The Ofugara Peace and Unity Cup is a veteran All-Star football league tailored for players aged 43 and above, creating a unique stage for seasoned footballers to showcase their skills while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.
