Lagos is set to witness a historic moment in Nigerian sports as the Southwest Games 2025 introduces archery as an official competitive event for the first time. The multi-sport tournament, scheduled to take place from March 25th to 28th at Teslim Balogun Stadium and Zen Archery Club (by the pool), marks a significant milestone for the growth of archery in Nigeria.

Although archery enjoys global recognition, it has often been overlooked in major regional competitions across Nigeria. However, its inclusion in this year’s Southwest Games signifies a turning point, providing a platform for athletes to showcase their skills while inspiring a new generation of archers. Speaking on the development, a representative of the Zen Archery Club described it as a big moment for the sport in Nigeria.

He noted that for years, archery had struggled to gain recognition but emphasized that its introduction into the Southwest Games proves there is room for precision-based sports alongside traditional athletics and team competitions.

Archery is not just about hitting a target; it is a sport that demands intense focus, discipline, and skill. The inclusion of archery in the Southwest Games 2025 is expected to promote mental and physical discipline among athletes, requiring them to develop breath control, composure under pressure, and exceptional hand-eye coordination. The sport also encourages inclusivity, as it is not limited by age, gender, or physical strength. Young and old, male and female, anyone with dedication and training can excel in the sport.

Beyond its physical and mental demands, archery is set to provide a fresh avenue for emerging Nigerian athletes. In the past, opportunities for archers in the country have been limited, but the Southwest Games now offer them a stage to compete at a recognized level. This development could serve as a springboard for future national and international participation, giving Nigerian archers a chance to make their mark on the global stage.

The Southwest Games 2025 is more than just a sporting event; it is a movement to introduce new opportunities and elevate emerging talents in Nigerian sports. Whether as a professional archer, a sports enthusiast, or a curious spectator, this is a chance to witness history in the making. The rise of archery in Nigeria has begun, and the Southwest Games will be a defining moment in its journey toward national prominence.
