Some sports infrastructures built by Government College Ughelli Old Boys (Mariners) and friends of the School, have been listed for commissioning ahead of the School’s 80th anniversary, which will run from January 15- 17 2025.

Among the facilities to be commissioned include tennis and basketball courts, while renovation works will be flagged off for the six lane Tartan Tracks.

The idea is for Government College Ughelli to key into the National Sports Commission (NSC) policy drive, which is the development of Sports Infrastructure Nationwide as part of its Sports economy philosophy.

Government College Ughelli served as a veritable camping site for Bendel State in hockey, cricket and football in the seventies and eighties, while the mythical Afuze Games Village hosted the other sports.

With a four pitch football field overlapping two cricket pitches and a pavilion, athletics field, hockey field, tennis and basketball courts, modern sports facilities have since been added to the collection.

In a statement yesterday, GCU said that two newly constructed and standard tennis courts, financed by the North America branch, will be commissioned alongside the Appian way solar street lights project by the President General Worldwide, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje (SAN).

According to the statement, the Ovie of Ughelli, HRM Oharisi III commissioned the ultra-modern basketball court built and donated by Brown Hill a few days ago.

Beyond sports facilities, the 1,000 seater auditorium and the Deputy Principal’s quarters, overlooking the athletics field would be commissioned.

A list of distinguished awardees will be unveiled on the final day in the spirit of honoring the past heroes and inspiring the future.
