There was jubilation in Team Nigeria’s camp, yesterday, as Esther Ogechi Nworgu, grabbed the nation’s second medal at the ongoing Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
She clinched the silver medal in the women’s up to 41kg Para-Powerlifting.
On her way to the podium, Nworgu set two new Paralympic records with her last two attempts, lifting 112kg and 118kg respectively.
She lifted 118kg in her third attempt, going into the lead just before China’s Zhe Cui would compete.
However, the Chinese went on to lift 119kg to surpass the Nigerian powerlifter’s effort, setting a new Games record and having the chance to attempt another record of 124kg to win the gold medal.
Reacting to the feat, Sports Minister, John Owan Enoh, congratulated Nworgu for winning the silver medal, describing her as a great athlete.
