SSANU, NASU protest withheld salaries in Niger

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, have protested what they termed injustice over nonpayment of their salaries by the Federal Government.

The two unions appealed to the federal government to hasten action in the implementation of their demands to avoid a total breakdown of university education across the country.

The protesters led by the Chairman of SSANU gathered at the entrance of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, to demand the payment of their salaries.

The protest which lasted several hours led to the interruption on some major roads within the university community and caused traffic, disrupting vehicular movement. They also blocked the entrance to the Senate Building.

The workers had several inscriptions on their placards, as they marched around the university campus.

While handing over their letter of grievance to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Faruk Kuta, they warned that if within a short period, their demands are not met, the fate of university students will be left hanging.

Kuta had promised that the committee of Vice-chancellors will immediately take up the issues, and see that there is no breakdown of academic activities.

The demands put forward by both unions include the re-negotiation of the 2009 agreement, stopping the usurpation of the headship of non-teaching staff schedules of duty, and discrimination against non-teaching staff.

Other demands are the payment of the N50 billion earned allowance, payment of outstanding wage award, increased funding of the universities, following global best standards, and payment of arrears of 25-35 percent salary increase.
