God is awesome – Part 2

In his book, Awesome, Exploring the Nature and Names of Jesus, Dick Eastman wrote that awesome means: “Awe-inspiring; exalted, wonderful, remarkable, extraordinary; magnificent.” He continued, “this describes a person or experience that is stirring or deeply moving. Awe is “a feeling of fearful or profound respect or wonder inspired by the superiority or grandeur of a person.”

The awesomeness of God is shared among the triune God. The triune God share the same attributes and character. That implies that Jesus is awesome. He is awesome in every respect! We must see him as awe-inspiring.
Jesus is awesome because of his dazzling beauty. “The Son is the dazzling radiance of God’s splendour.” (Hebrews 1:3TPT; Psalm 27:4; 96:4, 6 MSG).

Jesus is awesome because He is the Creator of all things. As Madeleine L’Engle wrote: “Christ is the Word that shouted all things into being and who continually calls each of us into fuller being, every day, every minute, right now.”
Jesus is awesome because He was God who became man. “Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross,”(Philippians 2:6-8 NLT).

Jesus is awesome because though he was fully human, He was also fully God. As Novatian, the Catholic theologian wrote: “He is indeed proved to be the Son of His Father. But He is found to be both Lord and God of all else…For He is God, and all things are subjected to Him.”

Jesus is awesome because of His sufferings for humanity. Eugene H. Peterson wrote: “The cross of Christ is the central fact to which all other facts are subordinate.” About Christ’s sufferings for humanity, Peter said: “He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed,” (1 Peter 2:24 NLT).

Jesus is awesome because of his death and resurrection. Jesus told Martha: “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?” (John 11:25-26 NLT).

Jesus is awesome because of His Ascension. John Calvin wrote these words about the ascended Christ. “Christ was taken up into heaven, not to enjoy blessed rest at a distance from us, but to govern the world for the salvation of all believers.” Jesus is awesome because of the mystery of His blood. The blood of Jesus is powerful, intense to cleanse all sins and pristine and holy to atone for man’s sins. “For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty’s life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God,” (1 Peter 1:18-19 NLT).

Jesus is awesome because of his power. Luke 9:43 says: “Awe gripped the people as they saw this majestic display of God’s power,” (NLT).Christ is awesome in His beauty, awesome as the Creator, awesome in His humanity, awesome in divinity, awesome in His suffering, awesome in His death and resurrection, awesome in Ascension and awesome because of the power of His blood.
