(1.0) Definitions
Adoration is the quiet contemplation of God and His character that leads to a deeper love for Him and a greater dedication to Him. Therefore, true adoration of God can only occur when you know the true nature and character of God as revealed in the Holy Scriptures. Human speculation about God is never sufficient as this may lead to adoration of idols or a fabrication of our own imagination of God. Clear Biblical definition of God, knowledge of God, nature of God and character of God will be discussed later in this presentation.
Adoration is close to worship, yet distinct. Worship, generally speaking, involves expression – a declaration of appreciation – whereas adoration is the silent contemplation of God that takes place deep in the soul and is, in fact, beyond words. Adoration is beyond trying to understand God, but looking in love and longing on Him as revealed in Jesus. Adoration of God is seldom mentioned in modern manuals on prayer, but was often practiced by some heroes of our faith. Giants of the Christian faith in the past often practiced adoration; these saints grew in holiness as they grew in the steadiness and fixity of their gazing on the Lord.
Currently, Christians rarely engage in adoration and this may be related to the scarcity of this subject in the teaching and preaching of the building blocks of prayer. Remaining still before the Lord is the secret, but keeping still is a problem for many Christians in these frantic and frenetic days when people seem troubled is another thing.
Adoration also conjures much love and admiration. Adoration of God involves quiet celebration of God in your soul and spirit because you love Him. You cannot truly love or admire someone whose attributes you do not know. Numerous attributes of God are described in the Holy Bible. Some of these attributes are unique to Him as God; others we see reflected in human beings also as a result of their being created in God’s image.
