‘The amount of money you make from comedy depends on the work you put in – Deacon Famous

Awesome ‘Deacon Famous’ Chidiebere

One of the enduring strengths of Nigerians is the smiles that hide the barrage of challenges they are confronted with daily. Those smiles do not come from the ease of how they have seemingly walked over the difficulties, but there are some individuals responsible for the brightness in their lives.

Nigerian comedians have over the years become the relief and get-away  medicine from the strains of challenges life throws at fellow citizens. One of those responsible for the smiles, despite the struggles of being Nigerians is skit maker, Awesome Chidiebere, popularly referred to as Deacon Famous.

Deacon Famous, who has been in the Nigerian entertainment industry for decades, is one of the drivers of the industry, where he first started as a kid actor before taking time off to concentrate on his education. After his secondary school, the comedian studied Criminology and Security Study from National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and History and International Relations at the Delta State University, Abraka.

While many thought Awesome Chidiebere would return to the entertainment scene as an actor, he had embraced something not-so different from what he was known for, but a diversion from what it used to be.

“I started comedy from secondary school, I was entertaining my schoolmates during social gatherings in school and after secondary school, I took it as a job and I’ve been feeding with it. In the university, I was the best and most influential comedian on campus and I held the biggest shows on campus”, Deacon Famous said while narrating his journey into comedy during an interview.

Ten years on in the industry as a comedian, Deacon Famous has grown to become one the A-list social media comedians in the country. He has carved a niche for himself as one of the best among his contemporaries in the business.

Born in the 1980s, Deacon Famous’  contents on Instagram are highly engaging, funny, and pointers to the undisputable fact that he is one of the best in the sector in the country. His contents are highly sought-after as shown by the huge following he enjoys on social media, boasting of 138,000 followers on Instagram; over 62,000 subscribers on Youtube and 1.3million followers on Facebook.

Sharing how he got his nickname, the multi-talented act stated: “The name Famous was given to me by my secondary school teacher, I added Deacon because I was doing gospel comedy. I started getting jokes from the Bible and that really helped me. So I chose the moniker Deacon Famous’.

Speaking on the gains in the industry, having found himself in Nollywood previously, Deacon Famous argued that comedy is more financially rewarding than acting in the country.

“Comedy is a very lucrative business but the amount you make, depends on the amount of work you put in. They’re people who have built mansions and Estates through comedy,” Deacon Famous said.

Reeling out the names of  comedians who have inspired him through his journey, the trailblazing comic act mentioned AY, Basketmouth, Bovi, Efe Warri Boy, Trevor Noah, Steve Harvey “and a few local comedians across Nigeria.”
