…As expert seeks character education as core school subject
Character-building coach and founder of Character Matters, Anuoluwapo Awofisan, has called on the Federal Government to make character education a core part of Nigeria’s academic curriculum, urging that it be treated with the same seriousness as Mathematics and other compulsory subjects.
She gave this call during the official launch of her new set of character and moral education books recently approved by the Ministry of Education. The event also featured a character-building conference themed ‘Academic Excellence with Character’, which brought together educators, students, parents, and stakeholders from various sectors to emphasise the importance of character development alongside academic success.
Awofisan, in her address, highlighted the mission of Character Matters as a platform committed to instilling good values in children through structured character training programmes, school engagements, and now, through educational books designed to teach core moral principles.
“Our books teach basic character skills like respect, tolerance, kindness, and humility. These are the building blocks that help children grow into better, responsible citizens and well-balanced adults,” she said.
In her presentation to the pupils in attendance, she highlighted that academic brilliance alone is insufficient if not accompanied by integrity and ethical behaviour. She advised the students to be upright, diligent and self-disciplined
“Academic excellence should not come at the cost of character. We must resist negative vices, including examination malpractice,” Awofisan charged.
Also, she emphasised on the qualities needed to attain academic excellence backed by strong character, encouraging the students to adopt a growth mindset, persevere through difficulties and take responsibility for their learning.
Awofisan explained the inspiration behind the books, noting that they are part of a broader vision to raise a new generation that can drive positive change in Nigeria. “The idea is to help children become better and more responsible. We are passionate about a better Nigeria, and we believe reforming the minds of the younger generation is where it begins.”
She highlighted the role of parents, teachers, and school administrators in building a solid moral foundation for students. “They must provide a supportive environment and encourage not just academic results but effort and character,” she said.
President of the Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria, Dr Femi Egbesola, reinforced the message that character is the true engine that drives long-term success. He likened academic excellence to a shiny car and character to its engine. “If your car is beautiful but the engine is faulty, it won’t go anywhere. In the same way, brilliance without character won’t take you far.”
