The Federal Nigeria Society for the Blind (FNSB) Chairman Board of governors, Mrs. Ayopeju Njideaka has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusion, unity, and empowerment as its Vocational Training Centre hosted the 28th Annual Sports Day at Yaba College of Technology Lagos,

The event with themed “YES! WE CAN,” brought together stakeholders, trainees, partners, and well-wishers in a vibrant celebration of resilience and ability. She described the theme as more than a slogan, calling it “a declaration of courage, resilience, and the boundless potential that resides within every trainee.”

Njideaka commended the management, staff, and organizing committee for sustaining an inclusive environment that promotes not only vocational excellence but also physical and social well-being.

Chairman Executive Council Mrs. Arit Tunde-Imoyo officially declared the games open and called for sustained collaboration among stakeholders to deepen inclusion and expand opportunities for persons living with visual impairment.

Participants, who were the highlight of the day, were praised for their courage, enthusiasm, and determination. “Victory lies not only in winning but in the courage to participate and the resolve to give one’s best,” She added.
The sports day featured a wide range of activities including the March Past, 50 and 100 metres races, relay races, skittle game, walking race, 50 metres sack race, and the “Fill in the Bottle” challenge. Field and team events such as rounders (male and female), long jump, shot put, and discus further showcased the strength and athleticism of participants.

Among the standout athletes was Gideon Uzoigwe of Blue House, who emerged as a triple medalist, winning the 50 metres race, skittle game, and “Fill in the Bottle” event. He expressed excitement at the opportunity to participate, noting that Blue House has remained overall winner for consecutive years.

Also celebrated was Motunrayo Apena of Red House, who clinched three medals, including in the long jump and other events. She shared her inspiring journey from being too shy to engage in sports while sighted to gaining confidence after losing her sight, expressing hopes of competing in future Paralympic Games.

A major highlight of the event was the invitation relay race (4x100m), which featured students from Command Day Secondary School Oshodi and Command Secondary School Oshodi Boarding, drawing excitement and reinforcing the inclusive spirit of the competition. The tug of war contest by FNSB trainees also stood out, demonstrating teamwork, unity, and resilience among participants.

The event climaxed with the presentation of medals, certificates, prizes, and trophies, celebrating the achievements and resilience of the athletes.
