The management of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Kano, said academic programmes running at its Community Health Institutions are fully accredited.

A statement issued by the management of the teaching hospital confirmed the accreditation granted by the Community Health Practitioner Registration Board of Nigeria on courses offered in the institution.

The statement attached included a letter of accreditation granted by the Community Health Practitioner Registration Board of Nigeria dated July 17, 2025, to clarify misconceptions in a media report.

The letter of accreditation signed by Dr Bashir Idris, Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the board, applauded AKTH for aligning with the foundation requirements and CHPRBN National Guidelines.

According to the letter of accreditation, CHPRBN, however, recommended improvement in the area of adequate water supply and provision of necessary facilities in the demonstration room to support practical training.

CHPRBN also recommended upgrading the examination hall with adequate equipment and resources to facilitate effective assessment, renovation of hostel accommodation to provide a conducive living environment for students.

AKTH’s prompt clarification on its accreditation status follows the recent discovery of about 35 community health institutions in Kano admitting students to study unaccredited community health courses.

The development triggered concern from the Association of Health Practitioners in Kano over the potential damage the illegal institutions pose to the healthcare system in the state.

The Chairman of the Practitioners, Comrade Khalid Hussaini, recently told journalists that the disturbing development prompted the association to report the growing number of institutions running unaccredited courses to the state Anti-graft agency for necessary action.

The Chairman, who did not mention any of the alleged fake health training institutions, asserted that none of the said colleges satisfies the accreditation process by statutory authorities.

Comrade Hussaini disclosed that prior to admission of students, owners of the institutions are required to seek approvals from regulatory agencies including the Community Health Practitioner Registration Board of Nigeria and the State’s Ministry of Health.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Government has constituted a multi-agency taskforce to clamp down on health training institutions running unaccredited courses in the state.
