Aize Mohammed Paul, for the first time, will stage a show at the Alliance Française, Mike Adenuga Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos. It is the third in a series titled, Flares of Enthusiasm, Dash Between, which was started in 2020.

This year’s show is a fusion of art and virtual reality (VR) technology, with the VR having 10 virtual rooms, and each room having some images on display.

Tagged, Eren Oghe Okhaza – Ekp Oghe ule Obaba (A safe place to find a purpose for your story), Paul said the exhibition is one way to create a sustainable channel for the artist and the market. He described the ethos of his art as self, a means to navigate one’s life purpose, with a mission to inspire individualism to creatively encourage humanism on a global scale.

“For artistic purposes, my drive comes from aligning the individuals I capture with a creative process that enables conversation, sustainability and constructive engagement.

“I use both my native Benin dialect and English in expressing my art. My first exhibition was an installation at the 1952 Africa Gallery in Lagos. The next in the series was at my private studio in Lagos. This included a virtual reality experience of my work ranging from archive pieces to the latest.

“Lamu, Kenya 2022, was my third installation; this was at Peponi Hotel, featuring the virtual reality experience and physical prints.

“Shared experiences from the show reaffirmed the people’s self-awareness and life purpose featuring art and a voice-over narrating tales of life and death.

“Integrating the virtual reality experience to a wider audience proves that creative possibilities are limitless while navigating one’s life. This is the third series of the show to complete 99 image series.

“There are 48 virtual images in the VR and 12 physical prints. The idea is to try to keep the black skin sustainable and this is a sustainable means to do that.”

The show will run for a month; the private show opened on March 24, 2023, while it was opened to the public on March 25, 2023. The show will end in April.
On the idea behind the virtual gallery, he said: “I started VR show in 2021; it came about micromanaging because we were meant to unveil all 99 images in the first show and we realised that it would cost about $500,000 to exhibit and my management said it’s best to create a virtual gallery, and it came out beautiful. Art is not just about the physical.

“I started working on the pieces for this exhibition in January 2021, and it was done across four countries. The fifth show will have 99 images and we will print all 99 images as well if we have sponsors.”

Speaking on their collaboration, the Marketing Manager, Alliance Française, Precious Naador, said: “We are very keen on promoting art. Alliance is an institution for art and culture, every year we usually have an open call where we call for projects and this project was very intriguing. For us, we are providing the space, collaborating technically for communication and anything that will make the exhibition an accomplished project. We like to collaborate with standout projects because it fits our brand and is appealing to the community.”
