FORMER General Secretary during Alhaji Abubakar Gimba’s presidency of Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Dr. Wale Okediran has endowed a short story prize in honour of the late author. Okediran, who succeeded Gimba as ANA president, announced the prize endowment during his recent condolence visit to the Gimba’s family and Niger State chapter of the association in Minna.

The annual prize which will be known as The Abubakar Gimba Prize For Short Stories Collection will be initially worth N200,000 with another N100,000 for its administration and will be administered by ANA. According to Okediran, “It is my hope that since the announcements for this year’s prizes have not been made, the new prize can commence from this year. If so, I will make arrangements to send the required funds for this year’s edition of the prize to your secretariat as soon as possible.

“Once again, accept my deep condolences on the passage of this great but humble man. May his dear soul continue to rest in peace, amen!”

Okediran’s prize is a worthy addition to the catalogue of ANA prizes. The short story has been conspicuously missing since inception.
