The First Lady of Niger State, Hajiya Fatima Umaru Bago, has called for increased sensitisation to curb the dangers of unregulated and crude mining methods in Nigeria, which contribute to the loss of lives and property.

Fatima Bago made the call during the disbursement of a N100 million donation from the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to the families of victims of a recent dynamite explosion in Sabon Pegi, Mashegu Local Government Area.

While addressing residents, she urged them to refrain from stockpiling dangerous materials that could cause harm or injury.

She highlighted plans to collaborate with the Ministries of Solid Minerals, Women Affairs, Humanitarian Affairs, and Disaster Management to properly educate the public on the dangers of unregulated mining. This issue, she pointed out, has contributed to a decline in school enrollment and other social challenges.

Fatima assured the community that the administration of her husband, Governor Umaru Bago, remains committed to prioritising the welfare of Nigerlites. She also expressed appreciation to Senator Oluremi Tinubu for her timely assistance to the Sabon Pegi community.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Ahmed Baba Suleiman Yumu, praised both the state governor and Senator Tinubu for their swift intervention in the wake of the disaster.

In addition, the Niger State government, under the leadership of Governor Umaru Bago, has fulfilled its financial commitments to the victims’ families.

Items distributed included 50kg bags of rice, maize, salt, vegetable oil, mattresses, and blankets.
