In your own opinion, what qualities do you think are required or needed for a young entrepreneur to make it to the top in Nigeria?

To succeed as an entrepreneur in Nigeria, resilience and determination are essential qualities. The ability to adapt to change, coupled with a clear vision and strategic planning, is critical. ENGR. EMEKA C. ENE, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, OIDA GROUP

EMEKA C. ENE: DYNAMIC ENERGY ENTREPRENEUR WITH A PATRIOTIC VISION FOR CREATING VALUE ACROSS SECTORS.

With a remarkable leadership and success track record, Emeka Ene has established himself as a driving force in Nigeria’s business community. The CEO of the Oida Group has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, and passion for innovation; therefore, it is not surprising that he has become one of the shining examples of what can be accomplished through hard work and the relentless pursuit of excellence.

Beyond creating value through the Oida Group, Emeka is the Chairman (E&P Committee) of the International Gas Union (IGU) for the 2022 – 2025 triennium, Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigeria Council, a member of the Institute of Directors, Nigeria, and serves on the boards of other companies in the oil and gas industry.

As part of his contributions to the body of technical knowledge and best practices in the oil industry, he has published several technical papers and made numerous presentations in the areas of trade and entrepreneurship, local content, rigless well intervention, reservoir monitoring, and well conformance technology.

Comprising Oida Energy, Xenergi, Xenoil, and the Enugu Industrial Park Free Zone (Enpower FTZ), Oida Group is a leading Nigerian conglomerate with diversified interests in key sectors. It has established itself as a major player in Nigeria’s economy, delivering innovative solutions and creating value for stakeholders through its subsidiaries and strategic partnerships. With a strong focus on sustainability, quality, and community development, the Group continues to drive growth, empower local communities, and contribute to Nigeria’s socio-economic progress.

He explained what has helped him build the Oida Group: “Growing the organization, despite Nigeria’s daunting economic challenges, required a strong and enduring vision. When we started, Nigeria faced uncertainty post-June 12, but we recognized the country’s immense potential. We embraced our country, Nigeria, as a land of opportunity, with a vast population, abundant resources, and a strategic location in Africa. To succeed, we focused on vision, integrity, and building relationships by maintaining our focus and direction on where we wanted to go, even in the face of roadblocks, upholding ethical standards in all our dealings, and nurturing a strong team of outstanding associates and enduring partnerships.”

“Resilience has been crucial. Every setback has been an opportunity to learn, adapt, and move forward. Nigeria’s challenges are real, but its potential is greater. With persistence and determination, we’ve overcome hurdles and continue to push forward.”

Asked about the leadership lessons he has learned since he started the organization, he replied: “In our journey, our team has learned that effective leadership is built on a few core principles. First and foremost, I believe that ‘giving starts the cycle of receiving.’ As leaders, our core purpose is to make an impact, engage with others, and leave the scene better than we found it. To achieve any meaningful progress, teamwork is critical, and we recognize that a strong and diverse team is essential for delivering on our mission. We have built a very strong team over the years; I would say one of the strongest teams out there, and we have also invested in training our people. We sent our associates out for training right from the get-go. Because of this, our team is also passionately engaged in the mission of building a Nigerian technology-based organization that delivers value not just within our borders.

Integrity is also non-negotiable: doing business right transcends transactions and situations. Our vision serves as our North Star, guiding us to stay focused on our core purpose and be driven by enduring values. These values are rooted in faith, fear of God, and a commitment to self-accountability.

Emeka Ene pioneered the launch of the MIND AFRICA Foundation, a non-profit initiative working with rural children ages 10 to 15, and through this, he has been developing leadership skills and promoting lifelong learning, computer-based education, and hands-on skills.

Passionate about human capital development, he advised Nigeria’s young entrepreneurs thus: “To succeed as a young entrepreneur in Nigeria, consider the following essential qualities: Build expertise through education and hands-on experience. Identify your core specialization area and develop a strong foundation; create a clear vision, and set specific short-term and long-term goals. Align your passion and ideas with this vision to help build resilience to survive challenging times. Have a big vision, but begin small; take action by doing whatever it takes to move forward. Supplement your long-term goals with short-term income-generating activities; build your network, and access knowledge through reading, mentorship, and learning from successful entrepreneurs. Self-reflection is also important to ensure that entrepreneurship is your true calling rather than a circumstantial decision.”
