Zulum clears N8 billion backlog of gratuities, pensions
The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has approved the payment of an N8 billion backlog of gratuities to retired civil servants in the state. According to him, the N8 billion payment clears the 2019 and 2021 backlogs of state government liabilities of pensions and gratuities.
Zulum announced the approval on Wednesday, in Maiduguri, in a 2025 message to the people of Borno.
While clearing the backlogs of gratuities and pensions, he said: “I released N3 billion in June and September 2019 to clear the gratuities of 1,684 retirees. They left the civil service between 2013 and 2019 with payments of over N12 billion to them in 2020.”
He noted that the workers retired from the state and government services between 2013 and 2017. Also, he said: “Since I took over in 2019 to date, we paid N25 billion for the settlement of gratuities of retired state and local government staff.”
He assured that his administration will pay the backlogs of pensions and gratuities, before he leaves office in May 2027.
