Ondo pledges to increase capacity of mathematics, English teachers 

THE Ondo State government has restated its commitment to developing the capacity of Mathematics and English language teachers to the best advantage of the secondary school students in the state.

  The state Commissioner for Education, Mr. Jide Adejuyigbe, while speaking at the Opening Ceremony of another round of workshop on capacity building for mathematics and English language teachers in public secondary schools in the state, which took place at the Federal University of Technology, Akure said government was taking the step in consideration of the importance of the two subjects and the high premium placed on them by tertiary institutions during admission processes.

  He said the Dr. Olusegun Mimiko-led administration in the state would continue to prioritise training and re-training of teachers, especially in the two core subjects in its quest to improve the standard of education as well as ensure percentage increase in the number of students that pass the two subjects in external examinations at credit level.

  “The aim of this workshop is to develop mathematics and English language teachers’ professional capacity to the best advantage of the students. This has become a necessity at this time, considering the importance of the two subjects, and the high premium put on them by the tertiary institutions,” he said.

 He added that, “Government has been consistently approving funds towards improving the teaching method of teachers, particularly English language and mathematics teachers in order to enhance their teaching capacity.”

  Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr. Steve Awosika, the commissioner commended the tireless efforts of government at revamping the quality of education in the state in the areas of building of mega primary schools, supply of science equipment and instructional materials to schools as well as payment of WASSCE fees for all Senior Secondary Three students in public secondary schools among others.

 He therefore called on all stakeholders in the sector to support the government in the task of improving education in the state.

   The permanent secretary in his address presented by the Director of Policy Implementation and Monitoring, Mrs. Titi Abidakun, said the state government has invested huge resources on capacity building of workers, especially the teaching profession with the aim of enhancing the efficiency and productivity of its workforce.
