IN order to create an innovative and more engaging way of bringing the UEFA Champions League matches to Nigerians, Heineken has launched ChampionTheMatch campaign.

Speaking on the campaign in Lagos last week, the Corporate Affairs Adviser, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr. Kufre Ekanem, stated that as the UEFA Champions League enters the crucial knockout phase, Heineken is kicking of a new campaign, Champion the Match to encourage fans to create a truly memorable match night for themselves and their friends.  According to him, the idea is about not just watching the match but championing it.

He said, “This year is the ninth consecutive year of Heineken’s sponsorship of the UEFA Champions League. Since the beginning of this sponsorship, Heineken has always sought ways of making every match season more exciting and enjoyable for football fans.

“I believe you have all seen the brand new Heineken TV commercial, entitled, The Match. The TV commercial shows how much effort one fan would make to create that special match viewing experience for himself and his friends. It is this same passion, commitment and extra spark of creativity that Heineken brings the match experience to Nigerians”.

Ekanem recalled that last year, Heineken thrilled Nigerians with a lifetime experience by bringing the UEFA trophy to the country and uniting it with thousands of excited fans, adding, “The trophy was accompanied by Heineken ambassador and football legend, Ruud Gullit, who also hosted an award-winning live interactive Twitter session, #ShareTheSofa.”

According to him, it is in the same spirit that Heineken decided to expand into a full match-day multimedia experience. “#ChampionTheMatch is now a Twitter-based entertainment platform that stretches from pre-game build up, through the match action itself and follows through to the post-match debate.

“So Nigerians can join a global community of fans to enjoy an enriched match experience wherever they may be.  The #ChampionTheMatch campaign enhances match nights by not only having live match commentary from nine global football legends, but also global celebrity friends. So, every match week until the final, we now have an amazing platform that will constantly surprise the audience with unexpected guests and awesome locations from around the world.”

Disclosing that Lagos would be one of the nine locations that will host the #ChampionTheMatch series, he said special promotions that will give fans the chance to win fabulous prizes every minute of every match has also be embellished into the campaign.

“Every year, Heineken rewards Nigerians fans with once-in-a-lifetime trip to watch the UEFA Champions League finals, live in Europe. This season, Nigerians will join fans from 35 other countries for Heineken’s world famous Ibiza final, where Heineken creates the ultimate match night in a way only Heinekan can”.
