Wemimo Adewuni Obiwale: Advancing Africa’s stories with visibility and power

Wemimo Adewuni Obiwale

Wemimo Adewuni Obiwale is not simply telling African stories, she is repositioning Africa itself. An afrocentric PR professional, media strategist, public speaker, and women’s rights and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) advocate, Obiwale is the Founder of Clove Red Media, an impact-driven public relations and communications agency dedicated to amplifying African excellence on a global scale.

She is also the Convener of Spark Conference: Africa Unfolds, a youth-focused platform designed to inspire and mentor the next generation of African leaders. The inaugural edition brought together over 400 students of the University of Lagos for an immersive mentoring experience with Nigerian journalists and media professionals working internationally.

Clove Red Media is an afrocentric media and PR company focused on strategic media communications and personal branding for African professionals and organisations. Its mission is clear: to ensure African talents are visible, respected, and competitively positioned globally. “Africa is a land of talents,” Obiwale says.

“Our work is to showcase these talents and change the negative narratives surrounding Africa.” Through its impact platform, Africa Unfolds, the organisation connects young Africans with accomplished professionals across sectors, providing mentorship, inspiration, and the confidence to contribute meaningfully to Africa’s growth. Obiwale is also the Founder of Medrive, a media hub that has trained and mentored over 150 journalists in impact journalism, fact-checking, grant writing, storytelling, and personal branding.

Her drive for justice was shaped early. Growing up, her father ensured the family watched the 9pm Network News on NTA every night. “I remember stories of corruption and brazen theft by government officials while citizens suffered hunger and neglect,” she recalls. “I wanted to become a lawyer and sue everyone in government.” That childhood outrage evolved into a lifelong commitment to social advocacy, accountability, and storytelling as a tool for change.

Obiwale began her career in broadcast journalism at Radio One 103.5 FM, before moving to Nigeria Info 99.3 FM Lagos, where she became a Breakfast Show Producer and Co-Anchor. She later hosted Table Talk, a weekly programme that explored governance, gender, and social justice on Nigeria’s most trusted news station. Her work extended into civil society. She served as Media and Communications Manager at the Women Advocate and Documentation Centre (WARDC) and later worked across several NGOs focused on rights-based advocacy. She also held roles as Senior Editor, Advocacy and Gender Issues, and Senior Programmes Officer at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism, supporting investigative reporting and ethical media practice. Her excellence has earned prestigious recognitions. She is a Fellow of the Margaret Ekpo Youth Fellowship (YouthHub Africa), a Fellow of the Female Reporters’ Leadership Programme of the Wole Soyinka Centre in collaboration with Free Press Unlimited, and was shortlisted for the BBC Komla Dumor Award in 2018. Armed with a degree in English Language and a Master’s in Public and International Affairs, Obiwale remains deeply passionate about gender equality in healthcare, politics, the economy, and access to opportunities.

Clove Red Media operates from a bold ideological standpoint. “Africa is often portrayed as a continent of lack and dependency. Yet our resources built Western civilisations. Our talents continue to serve the world.” The agency uses a 360-degree branding approach -including personal and organisational branding, content development, photo and video production, social media management, media buying, and digital marketing – to help African brands show up boldly, professionally, and confidently online. “We are taking back our power as Africans by owning our stories,” she insists.

Clove Red Media has worked with African businesses to transform their public image from inconsistent to globally competitive. The agency has also partnered with NGOs on targeted media strategies, securing premium positioning for advocacy campaigns. One standout project involved branding and publicising renowned tour guide Pelu Awofeso’s new book, reaching over 200,000 new audiences. In 2025, Africa Unfolds hosted another major conference at the University of Lagos, engaging over 230 students in cross-sector mentorship.

Behind Obiwale’s success is a strong support system. “My family and friends have supported me emotionally, financially, and practically -from project development to sourcing equipment and even cleaning spaces,” she says. Her personal philosophy, “Life Is Lived in Days,” became the title of her 2025 e-book. “What we do daily is our lives,” she explains. “Purpose must be practiced daily – through our work and our relationships.”

Building an impact-driven, afrocentric PR agency has not been easy. “This is not the usual PR,” she admits.

“Introducing a new model requires significant investment, especially in marketing and audience education.”

Still, she remains focused on the long-term vision. Her advice to young women is simple and powerful: Find your purpose. Express it boldly. Make mistakes, learn quickly, and move forward stronger. Life rewards courage. When she needs to unwind, Obiwale dances, watches movies, exercises at home, and spends time with loved ones.

“The global community must acknowledge that they are indebted to Africa. We are not a pity project. We are the Source.” Through Clove Red Media, MEDRIVE, and Africa Unfolds, Wemimo Adewuni Obiwale is ensuring that Africa no longer whispers its story -it tells it with visibility, confidence, and power.
