Your experiences span the aviation, oil and gas, and power sectors. How did you develop a passion for this male-dominated field?
Honestly, I didn’t start out with a clear industry in mind. After graduating, my focus was simply on delivering results with excellence and integrity, regardless of the field. I was driven by a desire to make an impact and to learn as much as I could. My journey began in aviation, where I quickly realised how much I enjoyed solving complex problems and being part of an industry that connects people and businesses across vast distances. This experience laid a solid foundation for my next big shift. In 2009, I pivoted into oil and gas, joining Sahara Group, a company that thrives on innovation and impact in critical sectors. Working at Sahara opened doors for me to support energy needs and work on high-stakes projects that really made a difference. Then in 2015, I was redeployed to Ikeja Electric as part of the transformation team. It was an exciting challenge, and it allowed me to bring all my previous experiences into the power sector – a field that touches lives in the most direct way possible. Being part of a team focused on improving essential services and driving growth in such a critical area has been incredibly fulfilling. In every industry I’ve worked in, I’ve been driven by a desire to go above and beyond. That’s what keeps me energised; and it’s rewarding to see our work at Ikeja Electric impact lives, create better experiences for customers, and contribute to the growth of communities, industries, and the Nigerian economy.

As a transformational leader, especially with a proven record of growing struggling businesses, what would you say is your key impact at Ikeja Electric?

At Ikeja Electric, my focus has been to make electricity distribution more reliable and centred around our customers’ needs. We’ve dedicated ourselves to improving our customer experience, streamlining internal processes, and addressing energy theft—a challenge that impacts the entire power supply chain. One of my key contributions has been promoting a culture of accountability and innovation. We’ve empowered our teams to come up with creative solutions and made it clear that everyone plays a vital role in our mission’s success. This shift has not only made Ikeja Electric more efficient but has also helped us build trust with the communities we serve. We’re using technology to transform our operations and enhance service delivery, for improved performance. Our progress is not just reflected in internal metrics but also recognised externally. In 2022, Ikeja Electric was awarded ‘Best Electricity Distribution Company’ at the Nigeria Power Sector Awards, a testament to our ongoing work in improving both our organisation and the broader power sector. Seeing the direct impact of our efforts–powering homes, supporting businesses, and enhancing lives–gives me a deep sense of fulfilment.

What does women and youth empowerment mean to you, and what have been your activities in this regard?
For me, empowering women and youth goes beyond words; it’s about creating real opportunities for everyone to make a meaningful impact. I’m committed to fostering an inclusive community where women and young people have access to tools, training, and mentorship essential for their success. At Ikeja Electric, we’ve introduced several initiatives focused on skills, leadership development, and mentorship. Initiatives like our Young Engineers Programme (YEP) create valuable entry points for young professionals into the energy sector. Additionally, our recruitment processes emphasise Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, ensuring a balanced and fair approach that brings talented young women and men into key roles. Our dedication to nurturing an inclusive workplace was recognised when Ikeja Electric received “The Most Gender Diverse Utility Company” award at the 2022 Nigeria Power Sector Awards.

My work with the Women in Energy Network (WIEN) and our internal Amazon Meets sessions are also close to my heart. WIEN is a vital organisation committed to promoting the growth and development of women in the energy sector through mentorship, leadership training, and creating a more inclusive industry. Meanwhile, Amazon Meets is a quarterly forum where women at Ikeja Electric come together to discuss personal and professional challenges openly, creating a space for shared growth, support, and collaboration. These initiatives give our female employees the resources and confidence they need to excel in any field, including traditionally male-dominated ones. Empowering women and youth aren’t just beneficial for Ikeja Electric; it’s essential for Nigeria’s future. By investing in diverse talents, we’re cultivating a more innovative and resilient sector that can drive lasting progress.

Leading a major power distribution company in the heart of Lagos, what keeps you motivated in delivery?
Every day, I’m motivated by the people we serve. Power is such a fundamental part of modern life, and the ability to positively impact millions of lives is a powerful motivator. I’m driven by a vision of a future where everyone has reliable access to electricity, where businesses can thrive, students can study without interruptions, and families can enjoy their evenings together without worrying about power cuts. Seeing the tangible results of our work, the lights in people’s homes, the functioning equipment in hospitals, the operational machinery in businesses, keeps me energised. I also draw motivation from our dedicated team at Ikeja Electric. Their hard work and passion are a constant reminder that we’re in this together.

With your experience spanning over two decades, what life lessons have you garnered?
I’ve learnt a few key lessons over the years. First, resilience is everything. Challenges will always arise, especially in complex industries, but the ability to push forward, adapt, and keep a positive outlook can make all the difference. Secondly, the importance of integrity cannot be overstated. Leading with honesty and transparency builds trust, both within your team and with the people you serve. Thirdly, I’ve learnt that success is a team effort. No one can achieve great things alone. The more we support and uplift each other, the stronger we become. Finally, the God-factor is crucial in everything you do.

What key advice do you have for women seeking to grow their career paths and make an impact?

My advice to women is to believe in your unique value and never shy away from opportunities to lead. Often, we can be our own biggest critics, but it’s important to focus on your strengths, continue learning, and seek mentors who support your growth. Another key piece of advice is to speak up and advocate for yourself. Don’t be afraid to take on challenges in any field. When you bring your perspective and ideas to the table, you’re making the industry better. Lastly, stay resilient. There will be obstacles, but persistence and hard work will help you break through.

What is your life mantra?

My life mantra is simple: “Lead with purpose, act with integrity, and never stop learning.” I believe that every day presents an opportunity to make a positive difference, both in the workplace and beyond. Staying grounded in these principles has been my guide through both triumphs and challenges.
