To stay relevant in the ever-competitive job market, a non-governmental organisation, Moremi Techstars has urged more girls to dive into technology to bridge the gender gap in the tech space.

At a one-day Tech Renaissance 2024 event held in Lagos with the theme ‘Advancing women in technology from the boot camp to the workspace’, the programme is aimed at empowering girls and women in technology to be more competent, and savvy and learn about their careers.

According to the Founder, Moremi Techstars, Samuel Adetogun, 72 per cent of men are in tech, while 27 per cent of women are in tech, which makes women lesser in the tech world.

He explained that the firm has various aspects in mentoring young girls through training and providing jobs and funds for startups. With its accelerator programme, the girls connect with potential female founders in tech to build their own products.

Chairman of the organisation, Sooko Adefolahan challenged the girls to be change-makers in the tech field.

He said: “You must have an interest in tech, nobody forces you into tech, anybody who can use a phone automatically has an interest in tech. So, if you can operate a phone automatically, the only thing you need to do is have knowledge, train yourself and I believe the sky is the limit. There are so many aspects of Information Technology (IT), so many aspects of tech, that we have never even started in Nigeria, so get focused.”

While CEO of Rentors Limited, Alex Adefarasin advised the girls to be purposeful and intentional in whatever they want to do in the tech field. He challenged them to come up with issues peculiar to their environment and gender and problem-solvers by using the tech space.

“Turn that pain point of opportunity for you to develop something, it could be a product, it could also be you being part of a solution. There are many programmers, engineers, experts on Facebook today who are ladies too, who provide solutions, you can be one of them,” he advised.
