Folasade Omotoyinbo is an aesthetician, beautician and founder, Poshglow. She holds a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Business Administration from the Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic from where she moved to the United Kingdom (UK) to study Aesthetics at the London Academy of Beauty. She, however, returned to Nigeria where she set up her cosmetology brand, Poshglow and a Beauty School. Through her foundation, which she created in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, she provides for orphans, people with special needs, the disabled and the less privileged in Lagos via gift donations and skills trainings. In this interview with IJEOMA THOMAS-ODIA, she speaks on her advocacy, empowering women to be self-sufficient and drive for organic skincare.

Take us through your career journey?
My journey as a serial entrepreneur has been quite a ride, filled with challenges that have taught me valuable lessons along the way. It all started when I took the leap and launched my first business in the exciting world of retail, focusing on clothing and fashion accessories. That experience laid the foundation for my understanding of running a company and all the intricacies involved. As I continued to explore different avenues, I ventured into the realm of food exportation, where I gained valuable skills in customer service and team management. However, it was when I discovered my true passion for organic and natural body care that everything clicked into place. Establishing Poshglow allowed me to pursue my entrepreneurial dreams and make a meaningful impact in the industry.
What informed your decision to take on organic and natural body care? Any experiences?
The decision to delve into the world of organic and natural body care was shaped by a myriad of factors. Firstly, it stems from my deep passion for this field and my genuine belief in its transformative power. Additionally, it was informed by a realisation I had while observing people’s experiences with skin care products. I noticed that many individuals were investing their hard-earned money in products that failed to deliver the desired results. This led me to question the effectiveness and authenticity of the conventional beauty industry. Simultaneously, I witnessed a surging demand for clean and sustainable beauty alternatives, indicating a shift in consumer preferences. This perfect alignment between my personal conviction and the burgeoning market demand propelled me to dive headfirst into the realm of organic body care.
Your entrepreneurial spirit has led you to run multiple businesses, how are you able to pull through?
Undoubtedly, entrepreneurship in Nigeria, like anywhere else in the world, presents its fair share of challenges. However, amidst these challenges lie remarkable opportunities for growth and innovation. To navigate this dynamic landscape, I adopt a proactive mindset and tap into the power of my network to stay well informed about the ever-evolving business environment.

Your industry is saturated with substandard brands, how are you able to manage this?
The prevalence of substandard brands within our industry is a genuine concern that cannot be overlooked. However, it has served as a powerful motivator for me to carve out a unique space. Our unwavering commitment lies in upholding the highest standards of quality, transparency and authenticity. We leave no stone unturned in ensuring that every step of our process, from carefully sourcing the finest ingredients to conducting rigorous testing, adheres to meticulous attention to detail. Implementing stringent quality control measures is a non-negotiable aspect of our operations.
How would you describe the green beauty landscape in Nigeria?
The green beauty landscape in Nigeria is undergoing a remarkable transformation, gradually expanding as a result of increased awareness surrounding sustainability, health and the environment. It’s truly uplifting to witness more and more people embracing the concept of clean and natural beauty products, while a vibrant community of individuals and businesses dedicated to eco-consciousness continues to flourish. Nevertheless, we are well aware that there is still much work to be done in terms of education and accessibility. As the green beauty landscape continues to evolve in Nigeria, we are committed to staying at the forefront of this movement. My philanthropic endeavours are fueled by a genuine passion to empower individuals, with a particular focus on women and youth. By providing educational opportunities, skills training and valuable resources, my aim is to enable them to thrive and succeed in their own right. Through my acts of giving, I aspire to inspire others to join me in creating lasting change and contributing to the creation of a more equitable and inclusive society. My motivation to give doesn’t stem from abundance but from a deep understanding of what it feels like to have experienced scarcity and the transformative impact that support can bring.
As a woman in business, how easy is it for you, especially in a saturated industry? How are you able to stand out?
As a woman in business, particularly in an industry saturated with competitors, I recognise the unique challenges that come my way. Nevertheless, I perceive these challenges as an opportunity to set myself apart and create a meaningful impact. To achieve success, I prioritise excellence in every facet of my business, from meticulously selecting the finest ingredients to crafting exceptional product formulations and delivering top-notch customer service, by placing a strong emphasis on quality, innovation and a customer-centric approach.
How can we get more women to successfully thrive and rise to the top as you have done?
