Glass skin is a term that means having perfect skin. It comes from the Korean phrase, “yuri pibu,” which translates to English as “glass skin.” Having glass skin means that you have smooth, luminous, healthy skin. It became a beauty trend to refer to someone who has smooth skin as having “glass skin,” or “skin like milk.” And while this term could be flattering, it begs the question, can it be achieved without resorting to chemical peels?

What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels are a cosmetic treatment that make use of acids to remove the top layer of the skin to reveal a newer and fresher layer underneath. It involves applying a chemical solution to the skin to get rid of dead skin cells. Done to treat hyperpigmentation, improve skin texture, and increase cell turnover, this beauty treatment comes in different strengths. From mild to deep, and are typically carried out by estheticians and dermatologists.

Pros and cons of chemical peels

Chemical peels, although very desirable, have their set of pros and cons. On the plus side, they offer fast and effective results which is why they are so popular. They can drastically improve your skin texture, reduce fine lines, and brighten the skin.

On the downside, they come with a lot of potential side effects. Some include redness, drying, and peeling. A common thing with chemical peels is after doing them, you are advised to avoid sun exposure for two weeks. Your face will be sensitive to heat and you’ll be asked to not do any strenuous activity that could cause you to sweat. Additionally, chemical peel treatments can be expensive and could need multiple treatments.

So the question remains – is it possible to achieve glass skin without relying on chemical peels? The answer is yes, although it might take a longer and more gentle process.

While glass skin can achieve fast and dramatic results, they are not the only path to getting glass skin. Here are some alternative facial treatments that can help:

Hydrafacial: This is a skincare treatment that uses a device to cleanse, exfoliate, remove dirt, and nourish the skin with hydrating serums. Unlike the harsh acids in chemical peels, hydra facials offer a more gentle approach using Vortex technology and hydrating solutions to revitalise the skin.

Microdermabrasion: This is an exfoliating treatment that uses tiny crystals to remove dead skin cells and reveal a smoother, more radiant complexion. This treatment can be done to all skin types, unlike chemical peels that are avoided by people with sensitive or dry skin.

Achieving glass skin

Finally, the key to getting glass skin, with or without chemical peels is to first identify your skin type and skin concerns. Then, build a morning and night skincare routine with products that are tailored to your needs. Ensure that the routine is done consistently. A typical morning routine should include a cleanser, toner, serum, moisturiser, and sunscreen. While an evening/night routine should include a cleanser, exfoliant, serum, and moisturiser.

Furthermore, following this routine might not be as immediate as chemical peels. This is a gentler and gradual approach that will give you healthy, glass skin over time.
