Investigators announced that three individuals, two teenagers and a 20-year-old man, have been arrested and charged with reckless murder in connection to a shooting at a Sweet Sixteen birthday party in rural Alabama that left four young people dead and 32 others injured.

The two teens, Tyreese “Ty Reik” McCullough (17) and Travis McCullough (16) from Tuskegee will be tried as adults, in accordance with Alabama law.

The third suspect, Wilson LaMar Hill Jr. (20) from Auburn, has also been charged with four counts of reckless murder.

Reckless murder, as defined by Alabama state law, is when someone causes death by engaging in conduct that creates a grave risk of death, with extreme indifference to human life.

The shooting occurred at a dance studio in Dadeville, a small town in eastern Alabama, and shocked the local community.

Among the victims were high school seniors Philstavious Phil Dowdell and Shaunkivia Nicole KeKe Smith, as well as Marsiah Emmanuel Siah Collins and Corbin Dahmontrey Holston.

Dowdell’s mother expressed her brokenness and relief upon learning of the arrests of the suspects, who were not invited to the party and may have come with someone else who learned of the event through social media.

According to the database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University, this shooting was the 16th mass killing in the U.S. in 2023, with a total of 88 deaths.

The case has left many traumatized, including the families of the victims and the many teens who attended the party.

Investigators have not released much information about the case, including the motive for the shooting.

Burkett appealed to party-goers and the public for any information that may aid the investigation. The suspects have been charged with reckless murder and will be held without bond, pending their trial.

The incident has brought attention to Alabama’s high rate of gun deaths, which was the fifth highest in the country in 2020, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
