Every year on July 30th, the world celebrates the joy and support that comes with having friends. It is a day designated by the United Nations (U.N.) to honour the importance of friendships in our lives and to celebrate the special bonds we’ve built with our friends.

The friends we keep are the family we choose, and as the popular saying goes – “show me your friend and I’ll tell you who you are”, our friends are a representation of us, like it or not. Not only are they our cheerleaders, but they are also our confidants, and adventure partners. They share the good and bad times with us, helping us grow into better versions of ourselves.

So, International Day of Friendship is a day to reflect on how these friendships have enriched our lives and show gratitude in thoughtful ways.

Here are five ways to celebrate International Day of Friendship with your closest companions:

1. Send a personal note

Expressing gratitude and showing appreciation for a close friend through the written word is one of the best ways to celebrate this day. You can choose to write a handwritten note or send one via social media. But the goal is to write a message expressing how much you value and appreciate your friend(s).

2. Plan a date

What’s a better way to celebrate International Day of Friendship than to visit your favourite places and have a good time together? Some ideas of places to visit include a new restaurant you’ve both been wanting to try or one you both love already, a weekend getaway, movie night or arcade night among many others. Just ensure you do an activity that is mutually enjoyable and allows you to have fun.

Although this would require some intentional planning if you’re both adults as one person could be busy with a job, kids or have a packed schedule.

3. Host a get-together

If you haven’t seen all of your close friends in the same room together in ages, today is the best time to host a get-together. Invite your friendship group for a night of catching up, relaxation and fun. It could be as simple as a backyard barbeque, a game night, or as elaborate as a themed party. This is the perfect opportunity to reconnect and enjoy each other’s company.

4. Send a gift

Sending a gift to your friend is a thoughtful way of showing appreciation and letting them know that you’ve been thinking about them. Furthermore, make sure your gift is personalised, brings back memories, or is of general importance to them.

5. Spread the love

If you want to mark the day charitably, you and your friends can consider giving back to the community. Find a local charity or orphanage home you both care about and show support by donating essential items to them. This shared experience will always be remembered and will strengthen your friendship.
