Cockroaches

Cockroaches, those pesky pests that seem to multiply overnight, can be a real nuisance. It can particularly feel like they paid the rent, and you are the tenant.

With all the anger and irritation, you may feel like crushing them till all the feathers and dirts they’ve consumed come out of their bellies. I know! I felt like it sometimes back. But before you reach for harsh chemicals, consider these five powerful natural ingredients that can help you banish them from your home forever.

1. Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous earth is a fine powder made up of fossilized diatoms, tiny aquatic organisms. It’s abrasive to insects, cutting through their exoskeletons and dehydrating them. Go to a chemical shop in any Nigerian market and get it. Sprinkle this powder in areas where cockroaches are likely to travel, such as along baseboards, behind appliances, and in cupboards. Avoid areas where pets or children may come into contact.

2. Borax

Borax, a natural mineral, is toxic to cockroaches. When ingested, it causes dehydration and digestive problems. Mix borax with sugar or flour to create a bait. Place the bait in small containers or directly in areas where cockroaches are active. It can be most effective at night with lights turned off. Do not use Borax in areas where children are likely to ply.

3. Bay Leaves

Cockroaches are repelled by the strong scent of bay leaves. Fresh bay leaves work better every time. Place either fresh or dried bay leaves in areas where cockroaches are a problem. You can also create a spray by steeping bay leaves in hot water and letting it cool before spraying it on surfaces. Just target areas where you find them more.

4. Neem Oil

Neem oil is a natural insecticide derived from the neem tree. It disrupts the growth and development of insects, including cockroaches. Neem oil can also have a repellent effect, driving rodents away from treated areas. Mix neem oil with water to create a spray solution. Spray the solution on surfaces where cockroaches are active, focusing on cracks and crevices. You can also use Neem powder in place of oil.

5. Cucumber Peels

Cockroaches can be a repelled by the bitter taste of cucumber peels. This home remedy consists of placing slices or peels of cucumber out overnight around sinks, kitchen counters, and cabinets. Be specific about areas where cockroaches are a problem.

While these natural ingredients can be effective, it may take time to completely eliminate a cockroach infestation. Be patient and consistent in your efforts. If the infestation is severe, you may need to consult a professional pest control service.
