After doing time in prison, the release date of controversial cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has been revealed.

Bobrisky’s sentencing

Bobrisky was sentenced to six months in prison by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos in April 2023 for naira abuse.

The judge who sentenced Bobrisky without an option of a fine stated that his sentence was meant to serve as a lesson for others abusing the Nigerian currency. In addition, Bobrisky’s jail term began on March 24, 2023, the same day he was arrested.

His release date

According to a prison source and Bobrisky’s lawyer, Ayo Olumofin, the cross-dresser will be released from the Kirikiri Correctional Centre on Monday, August 5, 2024.

The prison source reportedly told Punch newspaper that, “Bobrisky will be released on Monday, 5 August.”

Additionally, his lawyer, Olumofin, who appeared in court for Bobrisky, confirmed the impending release. He said, “Yes, it’s about that time for him to be released. There is nothing specific that would be done during his release.”

However, the Lagos Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) spokesperson, Rotimi Oladokun, refused to confirm Bobrisky’s impending release. He stated that the Correctional Service’s policy prohibits disclosing an inmate’s release date. This is due to privacy reasons.

“Due to privacy reasons, I can’t confirm what you see in reports. We have privacy regarding persons custody, so I cannot confirm or deny that,” he said.

Bobrisky had filed a notice of appeal to challenge the six-month sentence imposed on him, praying the court to set aside the sentence and replace it with an option of a 50,000 Naira fine for each count.

His counsel argued that the trial court imposed the sentence on a client with no prior criminal convictions. And that the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) provided for the imposition of a lesser sentence.

Finally, Bobrisky’s case is similar to that of actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, who was convicted for spraying and trampling on new Naira notes at a Lagos wedding in January 2023. Omoseyin was sentenced to six months in prison or a N300,000 fine by Judge Chukwujekwu Aneke on February 2, 2023.
